Women and Weight

The Guardian published an article by a self-described "fattist."  This article is a rant against fat people, who according to author Ruth Fowler "are just wrong."  While Fowler positions her argument as a critique of fat *people*, she seems to focus her anger on women, not men.  Research shows that women are judged for their weight more than men. Read Fowler's article.  Why does she focus on women?

I think that Fowler focuses more on obese women than men because in our society today, it is worse to be a obese women than a obese man. Women more so than men are more commonly judge by their size. In today's society, a man's first impression of a woman is solely based on her appearance, whereas a woman is more likely to get to know a man before completely passing them off. It all basically falls into the beauty standard for women.

I agree with Cassie. Fowler focuses on obese women more because women are expected to be tall, blonde and super skinny by society. If a woman is over weight, they are not accpeted by society becuase they do not fit the "norm" and men base their first impresion on look. Hopefully one day that will change.

I guess Fowler targets women because of this commonly held 'beauty standard', but i don't feel that she is referring to the extreme standard of this unnaturally skinny and long blonde hair idea, i just feel she is in support of a healthier society as opposed to simply heating to one's heart content.
But honestly I agree with her statements not only for females but also for males.

Fowler is actually trying to enlighten the fact about the "beauty standard" as modupe has quoted. Been in a patriachial society is really hectic for women because it will be the women who will be looked down if they do not meet their "beauty standards". Women are much more judged in their appearance rather than their intellectuality so obiviously it is precise that for women to be an ideal she has to look beautiful, and by meaning beautiful is becoming thin.

I believe the author is so angry with women because it's shown through society that men don't care half as much about how fat they are or are not. As she said before, there are Dove adds showing "real" women. I once read in a magazine that a size 2 is not a real women. I wear a size 2 and I will not feel ashamed for what I've worked for. Maybe some people can't work out because of pains, or they can't have the willpower to eat healthy as I, a vegetarian does. But when it all comes down to it, it's about moderation. Not what you eat, but how much. I like how she brings up that these people call it an accident when no one is forcing you to eat any tpye of food or how much! Maybe the author focuses on women because she is thin herself and knows it's not hard to get there.

obviously, females are viewed in terms of beauty and a thin woman is considered to be a beauty image. However, males are viewed in terms of maculinity and no one cares if they are fat or thin. She most be angry with females, because, females give more time and thinks alot to be thin. However, they do not look at what they are eating. Some times they eat fat foods, and sometimes they do not even it in the name of dieting. If they take proper care while eating everytime, they will not have any problems like that and they can live a healthy life.
