Sign Controversy

Check out another post from Feministing.com about a church sign that references Katy Perry's hit song "I Kissed a Girl." Do you agree with Jessica's post?

How utterly insulting for lesbians. Not getting too into religion, because not everyone believes in the same thing, it's ridiculous this church is trying to scare people into being straight. Not only that, but Pastor Allison says it's for the young people. What are they trying to imply, that older people don't EVER experiment, as the song suggests? After writing this I decided to scroll through the comments and found that the sign was vandalized, I guess other people find it appalling too.

Ok, first of all this pastor seems to be a little off his rocker. The video is not like pornography. It never shows her actually even kiss another girl. Its a bunch of GROW women in their twentys that are wearing sexy lingurie and dancing around having a pillow fight. And at the end of the video katy wakes up in bed with her boyfriend like it was all a dream. Now, i can see how its not a message for ALL tennage girls, but truth be told, there are teenage girls out there who may be curious of other girls. I for one believe there is NOTHING wrong with that. I just read brittys comment about how the sign was vandalized and im not suprised in the least.

I believe children and teenagers will form their own opinions and decide in the end how they feel about things everybody has a different idea about what's right and wrong. You can't sensor everyything

I have a lesbian relative who goes to church every sunday basically since she was born, so i think that sign is ridiculous. Also its just a music video, it's just a song, to think teenage girls are easily persuaded by music videos and songs is kinda ridiculous.

if i drove by this sign in my car i would first be stunned and then think how awkward it is for homosexual people that either go to that church or drive by aswell. i know that many say that it is a sin to be homosexual but i believe that god doesnt judge and for people at the church to put this sign up totally represents that he does. the song they are displaying has nothing to do with religion and everything to do with attention grabbing in the media.

I think its irrelevant for a church to put up a sign like this. The music world at this present context is very competative and demanding. And the song is presented as her dream, and she has a boyfreind actually. So, where do you go wrong with just imagining, that you kissed a girl. It seems like pastor is trying to get peoples attention out of nothing.

For a church to put this display up is beyond my image. It's almost like they are little kids begging for attention. The church should be an honorable and respectable place for worship and this display just shows off a vibe of prejudice and almost a sense of hate..

I cannot believe that a church would stoop down to this level. They are reacting to lyrics of a song on mtv and while doing so really taking a risk . Their reputation could easily be ruined. Instead of a place of worship, love and ,forgivness this church is publically showing their opinion of gays and lesbians literally saying they should go to hell. wow!

I think that this song isn't as bad as MANY other songs. I don't find anything wrong with the song. How does the sing have anything to do with the church really. It's more of a statment that they could say in maybe a sermon inside the church it makes no sense to post on a church sign it makes other people like me think wow that church freaks me out. No offense I've got very church oriented family but this would kind of make me not want to go to this church. I think there is many more songs like "I'm in love with a stripper" thats worse than "I kissed a girl". Plus a lot of girls Kiss each other with out being lesbians, when they greet each other, maybe if your best friends...

I saw the post on the news the night it was displayed. I was at first shock of how cruel society is and then my shock went to sorrow for all the gays, lesbians, and those who are cross-sexed. I would not want my sexuality displayed like that. As far as the video, I have not seen it. As far as the pastor, I feel he should strongly apologize for the hurt that he has caused in society.

I can't believe that a church would actually publish something like that outside their church. There are probably a lot of people that took defense to this. I also think that even more people who weren’t gay still disliked it I wonder if every single person who goes to this church believed fully in what was said. Maybe someone who was gay went to that church. I believe that it is your choice to be gay and you can’t help it. It’s no one’s business and it’s not right for that church to display that.

I think this sign will only scare little children. I would believe that if someone attends church on a regular basis that they would know that it is a sin to be with someone of the same sex, so why go though all that effort to scare everyone. I am not a religious person and believe that pushing religion onto one is wrong and he is pushing. If I had kids and we past that church how would I explain that to them. Also there are worse songs out there and he picked that one to write on the board about, does that mean that he is ok with all other songs? I believe it is good to be with whoever treats you right and you can see yourself growing old with.

WOW! This sign is crazy. I never heard of a church doing that. I mean I know what the bible says about gays and lesbians, but the pastor didn't need to be so blunt about it and post it up in big words in front of the church. That's kind of insulting even if you are straight. It's wrong to put someones sexuality out there. I just read the other posts, I am guessing it was vandialized, but still it's a little ridiculous do this.

Oh my gosh! The pastor most be out of his mind to think that he would not bring attention to the church. I think he wanted some attention from posting that sign. And how is the pastor's statement "... then I went to hell" a loving comment for teenagers?

Justina said...

I think that comment should have never been posted. At a church you think that everyone one would be welcome and respected. But this church has definitly made its opinion very clear.

I do believe that girls and women make there own chooses, and if they want to be straight or lesbain then thats there life. what is so wrong with that. everyone should be acpected for who they are not what their sexual orentiation is.

This sign is ridiculous. It's one thing to have your own opinions on sexuality, but to speak for an entire congregation of church-goers like that, is just wrong. The music video for that particular song is not any more lewd than other songs out today. They claim to put that sign up for the sake of young girls? So the won't gravitate towards that lifestyle? Adolescents have all types of media influencing there lives, a lot of which is much worse than that. Besides, what's wrong with experimentation in sexuality? If that's something that's crossing young girls minds, they are going to do something about it one way or another.

I really feel strongly about this topic. This is posted on a sign at a church, and i think its very offensive. I think its contradicting the way they teach about God. It has always been said that he forgives. And how is that doing anything wrong? This music video isnt persuading girls to kiss other girls. Its just talking about an experience she had, and there is nothing wrong with that. I'd be ashamed if that was my church.

First off, I am a christian and believe in what the bible says. But God also tells us that we are not to judge or push people away because of who they are. I have no problem with homosexuality, and think that everyone deserves to love, no matter who it is.
Second, when I saw the video for Katy Perry's song I honestly thought that it was kinda conservative and did not represent the video in ways that it could have.
Third, people should be allowed to experiment however they want to when it comes to there sexual orientation. Just because its now put out there in a song dose not mean its never happened before.

I had seen this picture on photobucket thinking it was just a joke but than I saw it on here and read the article I couldn't believe that the chruch would go to that level! I am totally shocked!

crystal said...

I can't believe a church would put this on their sign. Churches don't have the right too judge anyone for what they do. They may not like it but that doesn't give them the right to say they will go to Hell. God is the only that will be the judge of that. Everybody is not perfect in the churches. That is why most people start going to church in the first place to get the help that they need. What makes one sin better than another?

I agree with Brittany it is very insulting to lesbians. Also what Kirsten said is true also the video is just a song it doesn't show her kissing the girl.

Religion is a touchy subject, and I think everyone is in titled to their own opinion. But on the other hand religion should take note of the 21st century. Some rap music videos borders on pornography more than Katy Perry's "I Kissed A Girl". I think Jessica’s post is humorous and I agree with her.

Scott said...

Haha, i thought this was a joke at first. Like when you see kids going around mixing up letters to say funny things. Not everyone goes to church and believes in god. It is an opinion and everyone has a choice, and it is just wrong for this church to put down on other peoples choices. What would all the church people do if McDonalds had their sign saying "Dont goto church, its just a big scam"

I think the Pastors concern about this song is ridiculous. All of a sudden he is concerned about the message that is being sent out when there are numerous other music videos that also portray things that the church does not stand for: killing, sex out of wed-lock, stealing.
