Idols

From Heather

My photo titled “Idols” shows the effects of gender socialization of children and teenagers. The girl in the middle is my cousin Emily, she is eleven years old. She idolizes my sister Kelsey on the right who is sixteen. The original photo of the two was on the beach as they did the “Paris pose.” I took the original photo, cut them out, and glued it on the background of a red carpet image to symbolize the media. To illustrate how closely Kelsey can inmate Paris Hilton I obtained a photo of Paris and positioned her next to Emily. After collaging the picture, I then scanned it to my computer to adjust the image. In Photoshop I smoothed the texture, and darkened the photo. I wanted the image to look as if all three girls were standing together and posing for a picture on the red carpet. Furthermore, the idea of wearing a bathing suit on the red carpet represents skipping clothing girls wear today.

Do you think having idols such as Paris Hilton is good or bad? Are these idols brain-washing young minds on how girls should look?

Idol is supposed to be the person whom we look forward to bring the self motivation and confidence in ourselves. Paris Hilton is familiar with every household and what do we know her for? Enormous amount of money, fancy clothes, big parties, worldwide tour and so on. But its not the real world where we want to live in. And growing girls at their teen age idolizing Paris Hilton is completely wrong, and its mistake to even think that she is worth of all this. All the media attention and driving young girls mind towards fashion is means for increasing thier market and product. Paris Hilton is diplayed as means to launch products for girls to buy by idolizing her. But the truth is they are hiding behind the mask to cheat the young minds showing them fake frame and style of living. These media and idols are making big effort to divert young minds on how they should look, by crating a social figure like Paris Hilton.

I think this photo titled “idol” shows just how young girls are looking up to their favorite stars. I think the photo is done really well, and especially how it is made to look like the “real girls” are really on the red carpet. It’s true, young people today are looking up to these stars who portray a certain image. But what the media isn’t promoting is most of the images seen in magazines or on TV shows are air brushed. But yet year after year young people are going into plastic surgery just to look like their favorite “Idols”.

I think that it is a bad idea to have Paris Hilton as a little girls role model for the main reason being that Paris not even being a high school graduate. She has also been to jail before and has her own sex tape out. For an eleven year old to be idolizing someone like that shocks me because Paris, although she is extremely rich and famous, is not the type of woman that a girl should want to grow up to be like.

I love this picture. I think having the red carpet background is a great symbol used to represent the effect of media on young girls. I think the picture you selected of Paris is also great. It shows why the media tries to portray as beauty, extremely thin, oddly tan, with long blonde hair. The fact that these girls were able to pose so much like her makes me sad in the sense that they may idolize her, but makes me laugh because they would only know this because of how many times the run her picture on tv and in the magazines.

I think that having an idol is not wrong however if you think that u need to look as sinny as Paris Hilton that is when there is serious problems.
