Stop and Look

From Mira

The pictures I choose for this assignment represent how girls are viewing themselves. Many girls have a distorted image of their bodies. The Hannah Montana cake is for a 4 year-olds birthday party. The innocence of the 4 year old is been taken away by society's expectations. The little girl in the left hand corner is off to school to learn what is expected of her. The expectations of being a princess and being Barbie are big ones. In one picture, the little girl is already worried about how her hair is looking. The pictures of the girls are layered because the idea of Barbie and princesses are the underlying issues in girl's culture. These unrealistic expectations make young girls look and behave certain ways. It seems having individuality is not as important as conforming. The shape of the octagon is for society as a whole to stop and look at what we are doing and expecting from little girls.

I really love how this picture is in the same shape as a stop sign. I completely agree that America needs to stop and look at the images they are putting out in the media, and they need to be aware of the effect that is plays on girls, as young as 3 and four years old. Young children should not be worrying about how their hair looks at age four, and big TV stars for young girls, such as Hannah Montana, need to represent other forms of beauty besides the stereotypical thin, long blonde haired girl. It is an unhealthy body image that is being shown as the "right way" to increasingly younger girls.
