Boys vs. Girls

From Amy

The gender of a child is socialized at the very moment the parent finds out the sex of their child. Then usually the first thing they do is go to Babies R Us and start looking at bedding, furniture, clothes, and every other baby essential someone could think of. This picture was actually taken at Babies R Us in their bedding and furniture department. It was a coincidence to see already a girls and boy's room set up right next to one another to begin with considering that this photo project is about the socialization of gender. The main focus of this picture is the symmetrical line dividing the boy's room and the girl's room. The line signifies that boys and girls are specifically raised differently and what behavior is socially acceptable. Boys are raised to be tough, get dirty, and play sports. , while girls are raised to be gentle, caring, and most of all beautiful. Prime example of the behaviors that are socially accepted for boys and girls are portrayed through the toys and outfits in the picture. The angle of the picture was taken straight forward to portray a box like shape. A box in relation to gender portrays what gender behavior is socially accepted in society and what is not. Inside the box is normal, boys getting dirty or playing with cars and trucks and girls in pretty dresses or playing house with their baby dolls. Outside the box is considered to be abnormal and not socially accepted. For example, a boy playing with baby dolls or a girl playing with trucks. The color in this photo also portrays the socialization of gender. Even before the child is born, there are signs stating "it's a boy or it's a girl" in either blue or pink. In the photo I used those colors to emphasize the behavior of gender. Pink is a soft color, where girls are raised to be gentle and caring. Blue is a bright color, which portrays boys are raised to be carefree. When children become adolescents, girls are supposed to help around the house and care how things look, where boys usually don't care about anything with any responsibility. Last but not least, the surrounding background of the store portrays that the socialization of gender can be portrayed in many different ways. A parent can raise and socialize their child any way they want too, and Babies R Us is the depot store that will provide the socializing essentials that the parent will need.

I like this photo because it shows the differences in gender and sex for infants, the difference is so drastic between boy and girl items. I think that the photo was described well with the contrast of being inside or outside the box.

Normally in stores they would separate the boys section and the girls sections. Its funny to me that they would put them side by side to see the differences in each room. I like how Amy used the room divider as a symbol of symmetry on how specifically boys and girls should be raised.

I like this photo because it shows how much we enphasize the difference in gender. When the child is small enough to fit into those clothes it's actually difficult to tell the differences of the sexes unless they are dressed in gender appropriate clothing.

It is interesting how, in this picture, the displays for boy and girl furniture are next to each other. It definitely shows how it is only acceptable for boys to have certain furniture, color and toys in their rooms and the same with little girls. This photo really emphasizes such big differences in gender, differences that are taught to us from the time we are born until when we die.
