This photo assignment was to create a picture that shows the socialization of gender in children. I decided to make a collage of all different kinds of ads and pictures I found of young boys and girls. These pictures show the difference in toys boys and girl play with, the difference in clothing, and the difference in their environments at home (bedrooms). The background of this collage is yellow because yellow is supposed to be a neutral color between the stereotypical blue for boys and pink for girls. I have a picture of a boy in a fire truck dressed up like a fire fighter, driving a toy motorcycle, boys playing with blocks and dressed up as a soldier. On the other hand, I have a picture of a girl playing with a doll house, two girls playing with play food, a girl playing with Barbie's, and a girl dressed up in a ballerina/fairy pink dress. The difference between pictures of the two genders is that the boys are seen as masculine, learning, having jobs, and being heroic. The girls are seen as playful and living in a type of fairytale. Next I have a picture of a baby boy and a picture of two baby girls. The baby boy is dressed in a blue outfit and the baby girls are dressed in pink outfits. These pictures keep the stereotype that girls are associated with pink and boys are associated with blue, and that's how you're supposed to tell what the gender of the baby is, by the color of his/her clothing. Lastly, I have photos of a little girl's bedroom and a little boy's bedroom. The little girl's bedroom is pink, of course, with a canopy bed, frilly bedding, and a little table with a tea set, set up in the middle of the room. It is also portrayed as very neat and tidy. The little boy's room has mostly blue colored things in it and is a sports themed room. This room is portrayed as a little messier than the girl's room. The photos of these two rooms make it seem like girl's are supposed to over exaggerate their girliness and the boy's room has to be very "boyish". Not one thing from the girl's room was in the boy's room and vice versa. After looking at all types of toy ads and pictures of young children playing, I found that there really wasn't any photo that went against the stereotypes.

Boys will be boys, and girls will be girls. But girls can ride motorcycles, and boys are allowed to cook. So why are children told to play with certain toys? Everything is color coded because of gender. Our society has taught us that boys are tough and connect with the color blue, and that girls are pretty and like pink. This picture shows a variety of boys and girls representing how they are portrayed in our society. I think these stereotypes are causing a negative effect by shaping children into people they don’t necessarily have to be.
