Dressing Room of a 16 Year Old Girl‏

from: Rachel

This photo represents a portion of a teenage girl's dressing room. In the picture, you see nice dresses, stiletto shoes, Coach purses and a lot of make up. It shows how girls are influenced to be like the people in the movies, look like them and wear the same things that they do. A young girl around 16 years old wants to be as beautiful as she thinks the actresses are. In the background you can see movies that have the "beautiful girl" in Hollywood terms. She wears make up and when she goes out she wears pretty dresses and cute heeled shoes. When you flip through any magazine that would be of interest to a teenager, you notice the magazine reports what brand the actress is wearing, like a Coach purse in her hand. Now that the teen has seen the celebrity with the object, they want it. The angle of this photo is important because you can't see the whole room. The mirror is cut off, and the table with all the make up on it is cut off too, like you are only getting a preview of what it really looks like. The dresses are mostly brightly colored and the make up that you can see is also bright. Bright colors stand out, when you walk into a room your eyes will go to the bright dress in their.

I think this photo is a great representation of many young girls’ dressing rooms. You only see typical “girlie” things like flashy colored dresses, high heels, make-up scattered about, and designer handbags. So where is there variety? I noticed there were no sports uniforms, no sports equipment, so sneakers, nor were there books. The media is most likely teaching this girl to only worry about her looks. However, girls seem to forget that when your older it won’t matter what you wore, but what good you did.
