From Carly G.
Over the years much pressure has been put on young women by society to fit in with the crowd, and to be just like everybody else. However, fitting in is not always easy, and most often it is expensive too. In fact, many girls cannot afford these popular fashion trends. A solution they find is to buy inexpensive beauty/hygiene products so that they can afford the latest trends that everyone will notice. My picture tells the story of a girl who lives exactly this way. I chose to take this picture in the girl's bedroom because I wanted the angle of the picture to be from her perspective as she was getting dressed for the day. I like that her room is pink because it is the color that is supposed to be a girl's favorite. There are shopping bags from popular stores such a J.Crew and Victoria's Secret, but the bags are small, suggesting that she was not able to buy very much due to how expensive these stores can be. The girl also owns Coach and Vera Bradley purses, but they are also small, meaning that it was the best that she could afford. Because this girl spends her money on designer items in order to feel excepted, she is forced to save money on items like beauty products that people are less likely to notice. Some examples are the Suave, Secret, White Rain, and Sally Hanson products sitting on her dressing table. The dresser is obviously a family heirloom, which is noticeable due to it's antique appearance, the chipped off paint on the drawer, and the streaking of the glass in the mirror. It is important because it represents an item that is not a priority to the girl. The lamps tell a similar story in that here are no light bulbs or lamp shades on the lamps due to them not being a necessity. All these items, the beauty products, the dresser, and the lamps are not important to her because they do not contribute to her looking like everybody else. Also, the piggy bank suggests that the girl is attempting to save money for her next designer purchase. Finally, in the refection of the mirror there is a picture of Audrey Hepburn. She was an important face to add because I wanted to reference the movie Breakfast at Tiffany's, in which she played a young women who lives very similarly to the girl in my picture. Audrey Hepburn's character is similar in that she spends most her money on nice clothing, jewelry, and shoes, but next to no money on her home possessions. By doing this she is able to appear just like everybody else and feel like she fits in and belongs, which is exactly what society wants girls to believe.

This picture completely sums up what adolescence is “supposed” to be. There’s a JCREW shopping bag, a Vera Bradley and a Coach purse. The room is pink and in the reflection of the mirror there is a framed picture of Audrey Hepburn. She is a fashion icon. There are high heels, a vanity, and make-up, everything material that a teenage girl could want or need. The white vanity symbolizes innocence that girls do their best to try and hide.
I really liked this photograph because my sisters bedroom looks just like it. She also has all these high dollar purses and she's only 13 years old. Her room is also pink symbolizing her girly-ness. She should just be acting like a young girl but yet she has all these things that woman would have in their own rooms. My sister is girly but she also plays a lot of sports, and doesnt play them girly, she is very tough. So why isnt there some other things in her room to show that? Maybe she doens't want to show that?
this is a good picture, girls are always trying to fit in more so then guys do. going through middle school is when i noticed it the most. if everyone would just be themselves we wouldnt have to go through this all the time.
This room reminds me of my younger sisters. Everything she owns must be name brand or else she would not fit in with her peers. You can tell it is a females room and her brand name materials such as her northface jacket and J Crew purchases help her to feel that she is accepted by people her age.
I remember my little sister’s bedroom looking exactly like this when she was in middle school, especially when she was thirteen. The J. Crew, shopping bag and COACH purse really show how she is trying to fit in, be just like everyone else. When you are this age everything has to be some sort of cool and expensive name brand or you will not be "cool".
