Girls and Sports

From: Stephanie

This photo is one that I took back in the fall and when I was going through old pictures I saw it and wanted to use it for this assignment. This photo shows the socialization of young girls into sports. I think it is great to see girls play sports because most people associate sports with males. A lot of times when people think about the socialization of young girls they think of girls playing with dolls and playing house. I wanted to use this photo to show that socialization doesn't always have to be the typical idea of playing with dolls and playing house, etc. The definition of socialization is the continuing process by which an individual finds a personal identity. After reading this definition I wondered to myself why people associate socialization of girls with playing dolls, house, and kitchen, etc. and I also wondered why socialization of boys is associated with sports and action figures. Using the previous definition of socialization I do not see why girls can't identify themselves with sports. That being said, I chose this photo to show a different perspective of socialization of girls. In the picture you see a young girl head butting a soccer ball, this girl is my sister, Vicki. I thought it was significant to see her head butting the soccer ball because head butting a soccer ball is a hard skill to master; you have to learn to keep control of the ball when you do this so that your opponent can't steal the ball from you. Head butting the soccer ball shows she is confident in herself, which is a good thing. It is good to see a girl confident about something that doesn't have anything to do with her appearance or what clothing she is wearing. Also, you'll notice there is another girl in the background of the photo; she is there to show that Vicki is on an all girls team. That is significant because the girls on the team are only being socialized with other girls, there are no boys on the team for the girls to compete with or socialize with. You will see the grass is a bright green in the photo but there are also patches of dirt on the field, the green is a symbol of something fresh and new, by this I mean that it's a new concept to see young girls passionate about sports, fifty years ago girls would not have been encouraged to play sports. The dirt patches within the green of the field symbolize that even though it's new to see girls so into sports that there are still some rough patches, such as girl's sports not being held as high of a priority as boy's sports. Lastly, I wanted to note that Vicki's cleats are pink, this shows the stereotypical idea that girls like or wear pink, it seems to me that sporting goods companies are making sports gear pink to try to make it more appealing to girls to play sports.

This picture is important because even though she is kind of a “tomboy,” she still has pink cleats. This little girl has shorter hair which is not the ideal. The field being bare shows that society does not put as much positive attention on girl athletes. It is good that she is “breaking the mold,” but most likely, she will not continue this the older she gets.

This picture is great because it shows that girls are coming out and doing what they want to do because they enjoy it. I played soccer for one season when I was five then quit because I was always taught to be the "girly girl" I hated the game because I got sweaty and dirty. I wish I was brought up like this girl because who knows if I would be playing a sport now. It just shows you that what you learn as a child it will affect our outcomes as an adult.

I really like this picture because it shows a girl doing something most people would generally see as “out of the box.” But I believe that there should be no surprise that a girl is playing a sport. Sports aren’t just for boys. I think more girls should be encouraged to play sports rather than being pressured into typical feminine activities. I also like how the picture shows the girl playing rough and tough (something usual seen by males). Girls and boys should be able to do anything they desire.

playing sports is a great way for girls to socialize, i do agree. not all girls have to socialize by playing with dolls or playing house with other girls. girls can play sports too. people think, oh sports are for boys, girls should be playing with dolls and all that. Not true, some of the greatest athletes are women. Girls are usually calle "tomboys" if they play sports, but its what the love and they are still girls.

I think this photo is a great representation of the exception that not all girls want to be clean and pretty all the time. The young girl in the photo is headbutting the ball which suprised me cause usually young girls at this age are too afraid to be so agressive on the field and get dirty.
