This photo is symbolic of the way many teenage girls in America feel about their body, basically that it will never be good enough. When girls see other women in the media, they try to hold themselves to these unrealistic standards that are not representative of the majority of the population. The pictures on the mirror represent the constant reminder for girls of all nationalities, shapes, and sizes to look thin at all times. The models face is not shown and her body takes up the majority of the picture to emphasize the fact that she is concentrating on her figure. Another important aspect of this photograph is the models body language, the reason she covers her stomach is most likely because she is ashamed. The angle of this photograph allows you to see from the models point of view and how the media can produce distorted body images even in a thin, athletic female.

This picture is contradictory because around the mirror is pictures of models and superstars and the subject of the picture is dressed in workout clothing. It works as a close up because it does not specify between different girls, concern with weight is something that all girls face. Even though, her clothes make the viewer assume she works out a lot she is still concerned with the way her body looks and fitting medias unattainable expectations.
I think that this shows an insecurity that girls may have because of the media representation of women. The sizes of women in the media are unrealistic to the average body type and size. This can distort girls images of themselves which may be why the girl is covering her stomach.
From a very early age children see images of what they should look like. Even Disney movies portray woman as very skinny, big breasts, and very beautiful. This may give children ideas of what they should look like when they are very young. As they get older they see other movies and magazines with beautiful woman, who are skinny, wear a lot of makeup, have their hair a certain way. Women are portrayed as sex symbols in the media and this teaches girls they should be pretty and skinny to be happy in life. Even boys can be influenced from the media at a very early age. The hero’s of Disney movies are handsome, strong, and very muscular. Even in the media today men with big muscles, nice bodies are seen as being highly attractive. The media plays a huge influence on the way girls look at themselves.
This is a very good portrayal of females in our society. It is very typical to see girls always critizing themselves because they do not put out this model image that celebrities do. This pictures lighting also contributes to the meaning of how insecure girls feel about their bodies. It is a dark world. Girls everyday do not feel good enough or confident about themselves.
This picture shows insecurities that most women and lots of girls share. The media can be credited for this insecurity. The perfect image that celebrities and models have on the cover of magazines is virtually unattainable, since they are all airbrushed to look that way anyways. We are always to striving to be thinner so we can look good summer or prom or back to school. These problems have led to health problems in women and girls such as bulimia or anorexia and a string of other psychological problems.
This picture makes me think the girl is secretley trying to be like the models. She dresses in sporty clothing, but looks at herself in the mirror as if she is dissapointing? No girl this small should think she is dissapointing, there is nothing to be ashamed of! Although many young girls are like that becasue this is what they see in magazines and on tv. So why should they not be ashamed of theirself if the models are too?
