Should First Ladies Be Paid?

Hillary Clinton played an active role as first lady, which caused some people to say that she was overstepping her role as First Lady, but what exactly is the job description for First Ladies? Sheila Gibbons, author of Media's Lazy Fixations Obscure the Real Michelle laments that even though Michelle Obama is "an Ivy League-educated lawyer who commanded a substantial salary as an executive in the University of Chicago hospital system" most of the news coverage about her discusses "what clothing labels [she] favors; who could design her inaugural ball gown and swearing-in apparel (a staple of inauguration coverage); her affinity for "Dick Van Dyke Show" reruns; her favorite food (mac and cheese, reportedly); and so on."

Historian Doris Kearns Goodwin Gives us a brief overview of Michelle Obama's life before her husband ran for president.

Andy Coller of Politico points out that even though the position of First Lady is unpaid, it is a lot of work. Read his article here.

Read the two articles and watch the video. What do you think? Should we value the role of First Lady more? Should we stop talking about what Michelle Obama is wearing and start talking about her position on important political issues? Do you think the position of First Lady should be paid? Vote in the poll to the right and explain your decision in your comments.

I realize that it is alot of work to be the first lady but I think that if she is practicing law as her career then she should be paid for that, but just because she is the first lady should not require that she gets paid. That is a good question but I think also that as long as people work hard they should get paid something, but not just because they have a title.

I think that even though Michelle Obama is qualified for her political position as first lady and is a great example of equal opportunity, there isn't really a reason to give her a salary for her time in the white house. Mostly because there are no official duties but also because during the time the first family is in the white house, the government covers many expenditures and the first family has salaried white house employees to accommodate their needs.

Being the first lady is not something I look at as being a job so therefore I do not think the first lady should receive a salary. The first lady is probably a stressful position to be in but I think as a wife the first lady should want to support her husband as President without being paid. The President and his family are taken care of during his term so I don't see why the first lady would really need a salary anyway. This is a really interesting topic though, it really makes you think and is controversial as well.

Having read the two articles and listened to the video i am still unsure about the First lady being a salaried position. I think that perhaps there should be a stipend of some sort. The logical person to ask would be prior first ladies. I would be more interested inhearing what they have to say rather than the "opinion / spin" people/reporters. I do not necessarily believe the position is not paid becaues it is not valued, but because people have largley viewed it a token title. the title was given long before we had woman with the stature and wisdom of many of our recent past ladies. The women of today have outgrown and antiquated title...change that and then maybe everyone will reconsider their thoughts on a salary. I am totally impressed with Mrs. Obabma....

Being the first lady of the USA should be looked at as an oppurtunity for Michelle Obama and everyother first lady. I do not think that payment should be thought of. I realize that a first lady is cable of working very hard, but I think if we asked Michelle Obama herself if she wanted payment for being the first lady she would say no.

I think that the first lady should be paid. What husband makes a decision without talking it over with his wife first. I know mine doesn't. He always just talks it over with me, even if it's just to think outloud. The first lady is the support system. She is his "pitchback" he can throw ideas at her to see what she thinks, to see what the reaction will be

I think that the first lady should be paid if she does certain jobs that pertain to her career as a lawyer and educator. If she was to get paid for being by her husbands side that is going beyond the line. I think that she does play an important role in that aspect but she should not get paid for it. She did not become president, her husband did.

This is a very interesting question to ask, since first ladies often do a lot of work. However, I do not think that they should be paid. If we were going to pay them then we would need to elect them first, which would totally defeat the purpose of the having a first lady, obviously. Because she would not be the president’s wife she would be someone else. I think that first ladies should just take advantage of their powerful position in society and do good deeds with it; she will be thoroughly appreciated and definitely remembered.

I do not believe that the first lady should be paid. Just because her husband has worked hard to become president i don't think she should be paid for his work. Going to social events and functions hardly counts as a job.
