From Elyse:
This assortment of beauty products/accessories represents how teenagers try to make themselves into a different person to fit the mold of a beauty queen who is better accepted in society; this is all in accordance to the media of course. The media plays a huge role in how young teens try to make themselves appear. It basically places girls in front of a mirror to say to themselves, “what will make me better? What can I do to ‘fit in’ in societies view of what’s beautiful?” In all the magazines you see women with glowing skin perfect makeup perfect hair and now young women all over are trying to mimic their styles. The cosmopolitan magazine in the background of this picture basically represents the “bible” that young girls all over turn to for what’s in according to the media. The page is opened to how to get the “celeb look.” All the make-up is saying what young women do to themselves and the time they spend to get “the look” all the models have. The jewelry boxes represent the cost of beauty, the white pearls representing the innocence and purity of young women. In the shadows in the top of the picture there is a porcelain doll showing the perfection girls try to reach to be just like the doll. The coach purse with the mans hands putting money in it shows how men pay for their women to be beautiful and resort to the standards of American society all in favor of the media.

This picture explains a lot about how girls, teenagers, and women all constantly worry about their appearance. Magazines are something that girls try to follow along with to learn the trends for what to do and what not to do to look better. Society have a major affect on people, so they want to make sure they follow the trends. The Coach purse and Tiffany jewelry seem to resemble money in the picture because they are both known to be expensive. Coach and Tiffany are both popular with today's society, which means the girl may be trying to fit it. I'm not understanding the point of the man's hands in the picture putting money in the purse, because a girl should not depend on a guy to give her money or get whatever she wants.
I love all of the symbols that Elyse used. The pearls are a great way to symbolize purity and innocence. When I look at a girl wearing pearl I think that she thinks highly of herself. It is also very true that girls use Cosmopolitan as their "bible." Editors and writers make believe that all of these things work in the magazine and advertise it so well that girls are willing to buy it and obide by it.
The description of this photo is very clever. I really like all the objects shown in this picture, including all that they represent. I also think that each of these objects symbolize what the media does to our society, especially young girls. The media teaches girls how to be beautiful, skinny, sexy, and accepted by others. I believe what girls learn in the media about how they should look causes them to have a “life in a mirror.”
