Carter's Room

From: Jessica
I took a picture of my 8 year old son's bedroom. As I read the section in our book titled "Gender and Toys," I realized some things about myself as a parent. I am a single mom so I do feel that my son is raised more exposed to female "characteristics" because I am the one primarily taking care of him on a day to day basis. But, because I am a single mother, I try harder to put more emphasis on buying "boy toy" and keeping him active in sports. So I am actually more aware of my gender stereotyping than many other parents. I am ok with it though, because I feel like he is raised very well rounded and very equally socialized. My son has 3 cousins that are girls that he plays with on a regular basis, so he gets exposure to "girl toys." It is hard to not be stereotypical when raising children, because if not you have to worry about other kids and their comments and actions. All in all, it's a tough society to live in and especially to raise children in.
