Independant Boys

From: Corinne
This photo is of my nine year-old brother, Nicholas. He is getting ready to go out and play with his friends. He is dressed, and has props in his hands that are typical for American boys. This photo shows “Gender labels as social demands” because he is doing the typical boy things.

Nicholas is standing alone in this photo, symbolizing how males are taught to be more independent than females. The bat and football in his hands symbolizes the sports that are males dominated, also the sports that boys are typically taught to like. Also, if you notice, there is no colors in the picture that are considered girl colors. There is not a bit of pink or purple present in the photo. The colors in the picture are typically male colors. For example, blue black, green, and brown.

Nicholas is the perfect example of “gender labels as social demands” and this picture, I believe, shows it. He is standing alone with his boy toys, in a neighborhood of houses that look exactly the same. He is trying to fit in to what he is told about being a boy.

I think the bat and look on his face could also show violence. It looks like he's standing his ground and giving a threatening look to the camera to show that he is the dominant power.

This is the image of the all-american boy. Boys like being known as tough. The sports gear shows that he is strong and powerful. Boys in America want people to know that they have all the power and this picture shows this.

Nicholas has his 'tough guise' fully enabled. He even has the candy in the background to give him that intense sugar high so he can defeat any advisary, be it on the gridiron, the diamond or in the ring.
