Outside Beauty Kills Inner Beauty
From: Kristi
The focus of my picture is to show that always trying to have picture perfect beauty on the outside can kill one's soul on the inside. I had the girl laying in a pile of expensive, flashy clothes, shoes, purses, hair products, and makeup. These accessories symbolize the media and the presumed image of beauty that girls should posses. She’s laid in the middle of a big disorganized mess somewhat in a circle to show that she’s surrounded by the idea of beauty and fashion and she cant put it into order to fit her position. Some of the clothes are on top of her to show that she’s overwhelmed and imprisoned by looking good. The arm is extended out to the journal which is outside of the clutter to symbolize her true feelings are not in center with the image of beauty society has created. Also outside the clutter is a pill bottle, knife, and liquor bottles that are used to show that she’s dying. Not only is she dying but she’s killing herself because it has gotten too hard to always be perfection the outside. The pills represent a psychological problem where her mind cant handle the pressure, the liquor bottles represent her being unstable and not in the right state of mind, and the knife represents her wanting to die. These are all things people use to commit suicide and she has all of them laid out right next to her and her hand extending towards them as if she is contemplating using them. The only thing she is holding is a teddy bear that shows her innocence underneath all the confusion. I used bright lights to seem as a spotlight shining right into her emotions where she cant hide from them. I used a full frame shot to show the importance and seriousness of her feelings and that this is not a light subject. All the space is covered by the clothes to show that the media and society is all around us and traps us in. The vantage point of the camera is looking right at her as everyone else around her is looking right at her but she’s not looking as if she cant see what is really going on around her. The message of my picture is that when trying to be beautiful for society and the expectations, you loose yourself in the mix and sometimes the pressure is so strong that it can kill and destroy the person who you really are. I thought this was a very enlightening assignment and I enjoyed creating it.

The first thing that hit me when I saw this picture was how young the girl looked. For me it was a little girl living in a woman's world created by society. She is becoming just a face or just the products she uses or labels she wears. The original beauty is fading and turning into just a face.
I love how this picture is put together. This is exactly how I feel about the media, they get all of these products out there and they just hurt a girls self esteem making them feel like they aren’t pretty enough without these products.
The girl was overcome by the pressure of todays society to be beautiful. There are so many actions needed to be taken in order to be beautiful. The girl "died" on the inside by trying to conform to todays beauty standards.
This picture is interesting because it is the true example of how society can pick on the soul and can eventually kill you. So many people have been affected by what others think and have hurt themselves emotionally and physically because of this.
