In my photograph, I tried to represent both gender labels and learning adult roles. I believe I represented gender labels, by including a young girl in a visibly feminine bedroom, dressed femininely, and using make up which in society today is the common label of what a girl should be. I believe I captured the young lady learning adult roles by applying make up at such an early age, which she may have learned from her mother, other older women in her life, or other young girls who are trying to grow up to quickly. I think you can tell she is young by her physical appearance and by the items in her room, such as her Pooh Bear telephone and the painted blocks on her wall spelling her name. Those items represent her younge age because adults are much less likely to include those items in their bedrooms. I chose to use the natural lighting in her room because it is more pure then any tinted lights, representing purity of young age. Although her walls are a plain, light color, I like the bright colors of the items in the room because they symbolize the spunk, energy and creativity of a young mind and soul. I chose to take the picture through the mirror instead of a direct photo facing her because I think the mirror reflection symbolizes her vision of how she views herself as a growing women while capturing the childish items in the room which contradict that vision. I took the picture angled from below to show all of her make up, jewelery and perfumes on her vanity, the feminine and childish items on the walls in the room, the physical small size of her body indicating a young age and active body, and to show a sense of largeness and empowerment that she feels when she is applying and wearing make up. I loved that she has a peace sign necklace hanging on her mirror. I thought it was a good representation of irony because if she was comfortable and at peace with her body image and age, she would not be trying to look older by applying and wearing make up at 12 years old.

This photo reminds me of the quote “like mother like daughter”. This is shown because of the girls age and putting on make-up is shown she learned this from her mother. By having the phone and decorations in the background shows that the girl is trying to be older but still has a childish side. The media makes girls want to grow up fast and forget about the good times when they were little and didn’t have to worry about weight or make-up.
totally agree with emily because she wants to be just like mom. shes around her all the time and looks up to her.
This girl is using beauty products and accessories in order to be as beautiful as girls she sees on tv. She want people to liek her and she wants to be accepted and this is a way that she believes she can make this happen. Using all these products makes her feel good about herself and this happens a lot with girls because of how the media portrays woman.
