The image I decided to photograph was that of a young girl who can’t see herself in any of the images that are on the covers of all the magazines she owns. When you look at the sheer mass of how many magazines she has you can see firsthand how important these beauty magazines are to young girls. To me this photo screams that the images in the media are not the images of real people, and it makes young girls feel like what they look like naturally is not what ideal beauty looks like. The girl in this image is confused about whom she is supposed to be and what she is supposed to look like because all the images she sees are of beautiful blonde girls with bright blue eyes, and in the mirror she sees that that is not what she looks like at all. These images are burned in her mind and as much as she doesn’t want to believe it and others don’t want to believe it, that is now her idea of what it means to be beautiful. The titles of the articles on the magazines are very important in this image, when you are young you learn to associate words with images. All the images on these magazine covers are of smiling blonde girls and women, and the words plastered around their photos are, Look Cute, Fashion, Glamour, Allure, Beauty, Pretty, Sexy…etc. The association of these worlds with a smiling blonde girl subconsciously gives the girl a negative image of herself because those words are not being associated with a girl who looks like she does. The girl in the image is looking down for two reasons, one to show how sucked in girls can get into seeing what it looks like to be beautiful, and two because there is a sense of being less than, and not as powerful as others so she looks down at the ground because in her mind she is thinking “…That’s not me.”

Almost every teenage girl owns a beauty magazine. On the cover of these magazines are beautiful models or actresses and when normal girls see these pictures, they feel like they aren’t as pretty as the models. What girls need to realize is that not even the girls in the magazines look like that; they have computer programs to fix the pictures and professional photographers to take the pictures.
It is very interesting the amount of beauty magazaines are in this photo. I defintally think it helps get your point across how young women thrive on the images but out by the media. All of these magazine covers have beautiful skinny women in the them. THe young girl looking in the mirror is comparing herself to these images. But these women in these photos are to hard to reach because they have been photoshoped and everything abou them is different then it would be seeing them in real life.
This girl wants to be just like the girls she sees on the cover of these magazines. Girls believe beauty is the key to acceptance. They want to be beautiful in order for people to like them. Todays society has very high standards for being beautiful and many girls strive for this.
