TOM ? (GIRL/BOY)‏

From: Octavia

This picture shows how society decides a gender type.. At first glance, one would say that it’s a boy because of the tie and the hat and the posture. The tie is pink; but boys can wear pink too. Taking a closer look in the background, its two pictures, one of a boy, and another of a little girl it could be ether one. It’s hard to choose but one would aim more towards a boy because the face expression it’s the same as the little boy in the background picture. Majority of the features in the photo are more boy like behaviors such as, the hat is on backwards, the tie is not tightened, and the sleeves are pushed up; little girls don’ behave like that. One can argue that maybe it’s a tomboy and she just like to where boy clothes, and her parents allow her to express herself through clothing; it could be the little girl in the background photo. One would pick apart this picture to prove whether it is a boy or a girl in the photo which shows how society can determine gender typing.

This picture is significant because society has an overwhelming desire to classify someone as either a boy or a girl immediately and it makes them uncomfortable when they don’t know. The white button-up shirt they have on could resemble purity and possibly a girl but you cannot be sure. Also the pink in the tie would normally be considered a “girl color,” but this isn’t necessarily true because boys and men have been known to wear pink also. The pictures behind are significant because it looks like a portrait of a baby or young girl in a dress, possibly this person as a child. That is showing that they have broken out of the girl box and have shown an interest in different types of clothes that may not be considered feminine by most. The fact that the hat is turned backwards would also normally be done by a boy but this could be showing that this young girl is going against the grain and more or less backwards against society’s norms and expectations about gender. People should become more flexible with gender standards rather than so exact, there should be room for some experimentation and compromise without all the harsh judgments.

I believe that anyone should be able to be who they really are inside without being judged or laughed at.

People tend to base someones gender on the way they dress. They believe girls wear tight clothes with bright colors. Boys wear loser clothes with darker colors. In reality, gender is not based upon the way that one dresses.

This picture is great because it really exposes the viewer to their own sense of judgement. Most people would quickly begin to analyze this picture to figure out the gender of the subject. But in the end, should it be the first thing we look at?
