In today’s society children grow up in a box. This box consists of the stereotypes that the world has formed for men and women. In my photo, there is a baby doll, the baby doll represents the innocence that young boys and girls are born with. The environment around the baby doll is that only made up of the body images and gender stereotypes that world makes public for children to compare themselves to. In my photo you will see a variety of things. Some include sex and money, which makes up most the entertainment industry today. This industry controls what children see and hear on radio, billboards and television today. Because of that young girls grow up comparing themselves to the skinny, busty women smoking a cigarette. Young boys bulk up in order to look like their favorite television idol, who takes muscle supplements. Other important parts in my photo deal with body image, like cellulite or weight. I choose two photos that really depicted this. One is from a magazine that is talking about how these young celebrities are fit, but still have dimples on their legs. I think this is important because these are people that I look up to and instead of saying that no one is perfect, tabloids criticize these beautiful women’s bodies. Growing up as a little girl and seeing that would make me think, “this is not how women should look”, and that little girl will go to extremes to be skinny and dimple free, even if it kills her.

This photo “Baby Boxed In” caught my eye. This photo explains so much about the world we live in. I agree with Karen when children are born, society already has set expectations for them. Growing up children do not get a chance to form their own ideas and opinions. Society makes a clear stereotype of gender roles through much of the media. For example: magazines, television, posters, billboards, music and movies. This photo shows a female baby doll sitting in the corner of a box. The baby is surrounded by many different female photos. The child may be very pressured growing up because she is surrounded by images of female beauty that is flawless and unrealistic. This can cause many problems for young girls. Confidence and depression can become a major issue. The media portrays the idea that you must look a certain way in order to fit in. If you don’t you may not be accepted. Some are punished and in extreme cases harassed. The media is taking over and girls will have fewer choices but many expectations. The media makes sure they get their point across in any way possible. Their biggest target are young girls who can be easily influenced.
I noticed that the baby is in the corner of this box, as if she feels stuck between reality and what the media would like you to believe is reality. Also, the baby is clearly looking down at the women in the photos and the women up at the baby. This is a direct observation for the baby who will most likely then imitate what she sees in the media. This media showing sex, overdone beauty, drugs, money, and that you’ll never be skinny enough no matter how hard you try. I love that all of the articles seem to have slightly different opinions on what a woman should be. The one article seems to discuss new beauty trends that are sexy, but maybe they should go with a softer look. The one picture seems to show a younger, maybe teenage, girl that has a softer image but is still very made up. One of the images has the word “gender” and two pictures with it of a very manly man and feminine female. This reminds us how boxed in we are (the main idea of the picture) to a gender stereotype, how we must follow certain things if we are a boy or a girl, and those things (for a girl) are being shown in this picture. Also, we’re just assuming that this baby is a girl because of the box that it is in. We could be mistaking the baby for the wrong sex.
This picture shows how little children are boxed. For example little girls grow up in a world to use their body to manipulate men. As they grow up they also realize that they are not beautiful unless they have flawless skins, big breast, and blonde.
