Media Affecting the Minds of Young Adolescence‏

From: Christine P.
This is a photo of a young adolescent girl named Molly. In the picture, Molly is watching a movie she has stolen from her brother's room. Also in the picture is a scale where she is about step onto. The message this photo is trying to put emphasize on the society is how the media affects the minds of young children-in this case a girl. Molly is in her own room that is filled with dolls and stuffed animals; however I blocked them out to stress the color issue in this picture. I decided on keeping the color only on the TV in order to put emphasis on the women's body. This shows the truth Molly believes in rather than what she should believe in. The color on just the women on TV emphasizes the ideal image society has set in today's world. Having the rest of the picture in black and white symbolizes how Molly doesn't think that how she looks is right or in the eyes of the media. She is lost in her own mind and is uncertain with the way she looks. The black and white symbolizes confusion; she is confused why she looks different from the models on TV. Molly stepping on the scale the way she is shows that she is hesitant to see the reality and the disappointment of not matching up to what society has labeled as beauty. The shine of the bright, white, light symbolizes Molly's innocence and purity. She is still so young to be worrying about the way she looks. She is imitating the image on the TV by stripping down into her underwear. The photo is taken from the ground up to show how Molly looks up to the image and wants to look like that. Having only the legs being shown in the picture stresses how the media only looks at beauty and stresses the idea of sex in different ways. Women's legs are a main symbol of sex in today's world. Likewise, the women on TV doesn't have her face showing, instead the camera focuses on her torso and breasts-another symbol of sex. Both, the women on TV and Molly, doesn't have their faces showing which emphasizes how the media doesn't care about the person themselves, such as their personality, but rather their physical appearance. The media has negatively impacted the minds of the young children in today's world by the images they post in magazines and on TV. At such a young age, these images can cause harm to a child's self-esteem and self-confidence.

Christine-
I really love this picture. You really put a lot of thought into it and it makes you think about how the media really skews the image of a "perfect body". I like how you used the colors to emphasize certain aspects such as the black and white and the color of the half naked woman on the tv. For me, the fact that she is not completely stepping onto the scale shows how she may be afraid of the truth. This also could lead to the colors in the photo; the girl who is on the tv is in color which could mean that the girl watching may think that she is representing the perfect image. The fact that she is black and white may symbolize how she feels about herself which is not the perfect image of a woman. I really love the underlying meaning and the thought that you put into this blog post.

This picture is very good. however it's true that, teenage girls feel under increasing pressure from magazines and websites to live up to material and sexual ideals, leaving them vulnerable and unhappy, according to research out today. Girls as young as 10 are suffering from stress and anxiety because they feel under pressure to grow up too quickly, and weight control has alot to do with it.
What is more worrying is that the demand to be thin is not just only making girls stop eating now, but is also pushing them to replace their food with dangers such as smoking and drinking.
