Social Learning/Imitation: Youth and the Media

From: Aubrey
This is a photo of Jenna. An eight-year old girl who discovered a photo of the ever so popular Victoria's Secret advertisement lying on her mother's dresser. She holds the picture up to observe the woman and decides to imitate her. I chose to photograph Jenna not only because of her age, but because she is a girl just like any other eight year old who looks up to her mother and is impacted by the media's portrayal of a beautiful girl/woman everyday. The angle of the Victoria's Secret picture symbolizes the beginnings of the day to day influences the media will have on Jenna. The photo of the model is not fully focused on in the picture because it shows that the media has not completely affected the way Jenna thinks about her body image just yet. The reason Jenna is the main focus in the photograph is to show her genuine youth and careless kind of mind set. She has a hint of a smile but at the same time focuses on the Victoria's Secret Model. This shows that she is still young but she is also thinking about the way this model looks and aspires to look like her by imitating her. I chose to give this photo a purple/pink tint to show how the media really skews the truth about what a woman should really look like. Also, I chose these colors to show that Jenna is still a young girl and most young girls love girly colors such as pink and purple. I chose to highlight her lips to show that lips are a big part of a woman's sexuality and normally are highlighted in many sexy or seductive advertisements. I chose to match the color of her lips with her nails to show that she is still a young girl and to show that she feels the urge to make herself pretty such as putting nail polish on or lip gloss. The ultimate message I am trying to send from this photograph is that young girls are so easily affected by the media and so blind to reality. For some girls it ultimately starts with mothers because they are the first female role model a young girl knows.

This picture is really interesting Aubrey. I agree with your thoughts and reasons for why you chose to do what you did. Making Jenna the majority of the picture gives the observer the idea that she is the one that controls her own actions and thoughts. Even though the media-the 1/4th the page- has quite an affect on her, it is ultimately up to her how she responds to the media and the images that are portrayed in magazines and on TV. I also see the window curtains as blinds that symbolize being trapped. Having the closed blinds in the background can mean that Jenna is trapped in a world where young children feel afraid, embarrassed and unsure about themselves (and you could also say blind from reality). I also see that Jenna has a smirk on her face, which could mean that she thinks being sexy is seen as fun and games; this type of understanding can give the wrong idea to a young girl. Growing up with the idea that being sexy is for fun and games can lead to trouble. I really like this picture a lot, and I also believe that young girls are so easily affected by the media.

She has a magazine with a lady which the society would call "beautiful". The little girl is putting on make-up to be as "beautiful" as the young lady in the magazine. this is how the media influences little girls.
