Role Models

From, Amanda

Children learn a lot from their parents. They learn about gender stereotypes and adult roles. This photograph represents how children learn adult roles by following what they see in society and learning from their parents and older siblings. Men generally are stereotyped to be the "money makers" in the household. When children grow up with a father that goes off to work everyday and a mother that stays home and takes care of the house and the family that child learns about gender stereotypes. In this photograph a boy is looking up to his father while he is getting ready for work one morning. This represents the relationship between father and son. Fathers have a huge impact on their children, especially boys. Boys aspire to be just like their father.

I agree that male children look toward their fathers for guidance on how they should be when they become a man. The picture just shows a symbolism of the things taught to boys doing youth. By the father face not being present is shows that the boy is the father or will become like the father. The significance of the father and who the father is will reflect his son and therefore she uses the mirror to symbolize the importance of it.

Boys are highly socialized by watching their fathers. In the picture this is represented by the father teaching his son the proper way to tie a tie. This enforces many things. First that man are always supposed to wear pants an a tie as formal clothing. Also the colors blue, white and black are always related to masculinity. Finally the father's face is excluded showing that maybe it is not that important, because the boy will grow up to be like his father.

This picture is a good example of how sexism is created in our society. Little boys follow what their fathers do and young girls follow their mothers. But why can't they do both? This is the cause of why women and men have different gender roles in society.
