My photo is a compare and contrast of a girl's vanity. The left side of the picture is when she was 10 years old. You see the animated character Hello Kitty is repeated on a wooden decoration, some erasers and the pajamas, emphasizing her youth. There are some disney movies, craft supplies, and a princess crown resting atop a glass container labeled "Shopping Fund." On the floor there are a skew of books, a teddy bear, and some pajamas coming out of the drawer. This shows the girl's "organized chaos" personality, even at a young age. There are not many beauty products except a hair brush, a lip balm, and a few brightly colored clips. This shows that the media has not yet grasped her in their death grip of advertising, self esteem, and what 'beauty' really is. She's just a normal little girl, who likes to play and read. On the floor are books (Harry Potter) and a rhyming dictionary (perhaps for school.) The simplicity of these items show that she is not too concerned about her appearance, but still a girly girl (everything is pink!) The right side of the photograph is five years later, when she is 15. Her dresser is extremely cluttered, and the floor is littered with magazines like Cosmopolitan and Glamour, which can be mature reads for a girl in the lower range of adolescence. There are a few books on the ground with these magazines, but they are from the series "Pretty Little Liars." Not exactly a wholesome read. The dresser drawers have tons of fabrics and colors coming out of them, including some lacy leopard. This all creates a tone of unorganized, chaotic, 'hot mess' appeal. The makeup sprawled about on the vanity top is very much high end (MAC, NARS, and Urban Decay can all be easily spotted.) What makes the picture interesting and how you know this is the same girl's room, is the Hello Kitty themed lipgloss. (see second picture.) The emphasis in the second picture really exposes the girl's past love for the animated character and how it has followed her as she matures into a young woman. Beneath all the glitter and glamour, you know that 10 year old princess is still under that heavily caked on skin.I made the right side brighter and more contrasting than the left to emphasize the intensity of the colors as the girl begins to be influenced by the media and spends her (allowance? part time job?) money on high end beauty products and clothes, rather than saving for a car or college. The photo was taken from a looking downward angle to show a 'birds eye view' of what the girl looks down to every day before she goes to school, plays with friends, etc. The messiness of the room shows loss of control, as if the media is in power of the girl's self esteem and self worth.

To me this picture shows how media influences vanity in girls at a young age. There is a strong contrast in the items and the quantity of items between the two sides of the picture. Yet it seems to me that the items of a young girl on the left were just gateway vanity items to what she has now as a young woman, on the right. Media at a young age is preparing young girls to buy their vanity products and for each age group it just progresses and becomes “matured”. This picture also may imply that as you get older the media progressively produces more and more products for your age group to point out more and more about yourself that is wrong and that their product will fix it. She did a great job at portraying this through the contrast of quantity. This picture really speaks about media’s influence on girls self esteem and how they lock them in at a young age.
I like how the picture illustrates that even at a very young age, the "toys" girls are influenced to buy eventually lead them to purchase expensive beauty products as they get older. From just a few items to play around with at a young age like a brush, scissors, mirror and lip gloss, to many serious beauty products ranging from makeup to beauty magazines. So even a young girl needs to be knowledgeable when it comes to beauty to fit in, and as she get older that pressure to look pretty and fit in increases.
I like this picture. It does show how vanities change over the years. Although it may be the same vanity, the things that matter to you when your five, are no longer important at age 15. At fifteen, you are more likely to care more about self image then when your five. I really like this picture. It has two totally different spectrums of a girl's life.
This picture caught my attention while scrolling down the page for a few reasons. First of all, it made me think about how when I was a little girl and I had the same things on my vanity. The bright colored lip glosses and eye shadows, the hello kitty things, the princess tiara, and the Barbie book on the ground. It shows that even at a young age like that advertisement influenced the little girl in some way. When you move on to the picture of the vanity five years later, there is nothing but beauty products and beauty magazines. There is nothing personal or anything that would make it unique to a specific person. Which in retrospect is what the beauty magazines and products are trying to do, make you look like everyone else, because yourself is not good enough, or so they make you think.
This photo caught my eye because, when I was a little girl I wasn't into playing dress-up. I would rathjer be outside playing that is where I spent most of my time. Now, that I am older I have an entire make-up bag filled with Mac products. I believe the people your children hang out with might have impact of there life of who they will become.
My first thought when I saw this picture was, when did girls of such a young age feel the pressures to become a woman? Society n general thinks it is so cute for little girls to act in such a fashion, when in reality we are setting them up at a very young age for disappointment. Children need to be children, outside playing with others and socializing with their peers. This picture is the sad reality of what we expect and what has become normal of little girls.
This picture is very good in that it portrays how the media influences young girls at such a young age. This picture shows how vanity is beginining to grow in young girls which causes so many other problems a long the way in their development.
This picture really shows the truth. At a young age, girls are worried about princesses and fairytales. And when they hit adolescence they are worried about being the princess and living the fairytale. And being like the models and actresses on television.
This photo shows me how when girls grow up they change what they are now into. As a child I loved playing with baby dolls suck as Barbie, and I loved my easy bake oven. As I grow up I never wanted to touch a doll baby again but I would still help my mom cook and helped bake cakes. Now that I am older in not living with my mom I try to bake as much as I can although it is not as much I still have the same interest with baking as I did when I was a little girl. I believe some things can continue when you grow up not everything changes when you are older.
