Girls MUST be Girls

From Nicole
The young girl pictured in the photo was enjoying play time until she was told to play as a girl. The picture is taken at an above angle to symbolize the “boyish”, “unfeminine” behavior she was demonstrating is looked down upon. The tint of the picture is pink to show the femininity of the photo. She is dressed in a white and pink frilly dress to be “lady like”. The messy hair and bandaged right arm shows even though she is put in this dress to be a lady she still played as she felt fit whether it was feminine or not. Her gender schema is being developed by the mother attempting to take away the buzz light year stuffed toy which are known as “boy toys” and redirecting the little girl to the vanity play set equipped with a Barbie book on top because these are “girl toys“. The princess’s bedding and posters on the wall show the media’s impact as socializing agents in the development of the girl’s gender schema. She wants to play as she wishes, but the mother will not allow her daughter to participate in “boyish activities””, the young girl is going through gender differentiation. She is being taught through the media and her mother girls must be girls.

I like how the little girl has the "boy toy" (ball) in her hands and that her parent is trying to take it away from her. The camera angle is facing downwards, as if her parent's are frowning upon, or looking down upon, their daughter's actions. The picture is overwhelmingly pink and the daughter is dressed in a very dressy pink dress. This shows that the parent's are influencing their daughter's actions and making her into the stereotypical young girl.
