Influence

From: Capri
For my photo blog assignment I took a picture to represent young, female body image. I used a 15 year old girl staring at her body, seemly unhappy, grabbing at her stomach. I have the overall picture in black and white with only certain things in color for contrast to represent that appearance has become so important in a teenage girls life, that other things in their lives don’t seem as important anymore. I have put the girl in color staring at her “flaws” to represent the many teens image of their own body. I have also highlighted the ripped out magazine clippings of “your shortcut to slim”, the eye makeup picture, and the front cover of “In Shape” magazine to portray how the media intensifies awareness to women about how they aren’t slim or pretty enough, so they should lose weight and wear a lot of makeup. Specifically, the media’s products for weight lose and makeup. I have also highlighted her makeup and flat iron in the foreground to represent the fact that she has already bought the products advertised in the media for her to look better. I placed everything highlighted in the picture in a circle so the eye would stay within the picture focusing only on the things that represent body image. In the end, this picture is representing how no matter what you do to yourself, no matter how much weight you lose and how much make up you put on, the media makes it so you are never fully satisfied with your appearance. The media just makes women more and more insecure and self conscious, and those women keep buying more and more of the medias beauty produces.

WOW! This picture definitely captures the essence of what body image is all about. As you can see, the young girl has altered her appearance in order to become what the media believes is beautiful and perfect. In the picture, the girl is looking at herself in the mirror and you can tell that she does not like what she sees. The mirror can symbolize the media, because she is trying to create this image that will satisfy what she sees and what the media tells her. To me, this picture symbolizes the internal struggle that young girls are facing today and how it affects their overall portrayal of themselves. Media has a way of influencing young girls through body image—by setting a standard that is impossible to achieve—making young girls feel inferior and imperfect. When truly being imperfect is what is perfect. By showing the magazines it reiterates the focus on what the media is putting out there through advertisements and articles about how to get the perfect bod. The young girl is also wearing a lot of make-up which shows that she is trying to hide who she really is by putting on this fake face and trying to live up to impossible expectations. This picture is a perfect example of how young girls are feeling and how the media is affecting their perception on beauty and on who they are.

When I first saw this picture I definitely knew that it was about beauty and body image. The girl in color represents that she needs to change herself and all the objects in color are what she is going to do to achieve that change. Then the magazine pages on the mirror are the images that she wants to become. Since she is holding her stomach like that you can that she is not comfortable with her body.

This picture really portrays the affect the media has on young girls. The girl's face has a look of disgust, and she is grabbing at her flat stomach as if she is not perfect like the pictures on the mirror. The images on the mirror show the huge influence the media has on her way of thinking. The highlighting of the flat iron on the sink and makeup on her face show the attempt she is making to look like these media images. The magazine clipping "your shortcut to slim" shows the girls attempt to lose weight despite her body size because she wants to look like the media's version of "beautiful". This symbolizes the great impact the media has on a young girl's way of thinking.

The first thing I thought about when I saw this photo is what the media is doing to young girls. Here you have a beautiful young girl who is DEFINITELY not overweight at all but that is not how she sees herself. What the media has portrayed to us as being sexy is actually an unhealthy and unrealistic view of women. The magazine being in the photo shows us that the girl is striving to be like the ones shown in the media. It is a sad reality that our children will go to any extreme to try and achieve what they think is true beauty.

I really like the way everything in the photo is black and white except for the girl and the things influencing her life, like the crest mouthwash to whiten her teeth and the magazines with skinny bikini models on the front. This photo really captures the idea that young girls look up to these celebrities as their role models. They struggle to look just like them so they feel as if they fit in with society and will be accepted.
