This photo illustrates that most girls are raised to be as feminine as possible from a young age. The picture of this young girl is flooded with the color pink, which represents females and femininity in our
culture. Even newborn babies are "color coded" with pink or blue caps, pink representing girls, and blue representing boys. Just about every person in our society would guess, just by looking at the room and bed, that this photo is of a girls room, not a boys room. The pink bed sheets, pink pillow with a crown, barbie princess comforter, stuffed animals, and the second barbie princess pillow in the shape of a crown all imply and show femininity. A boy would not have these girly items in his room, and if he did it would be shocking to us in America because the media, our society, and even childrens parents force this gender socialization on everyone and tell us that boys are supposed to only be masculine, while girls should only be feminine, and anything else is unnatural. As you can see in the picture, this child aspires to be an princess. But why not a soldier, police officer, or fireman? Why didn't her parents buy her a G.I. Joe comforter and why isn't she sleeping with action figures instead of stuffed animals? Because the media tells us that those are jobs and things just for boys.
