Boys Will Be boys
From: Danni
In this photograph is my 6 year old cousin TJ. As you can see, he definitely resembles one of the cultures of childhood. This picture really puts into words how young boys are supposed to act and look like to be able to fit in with their peers. The picture is slightly tilted towards him, showing that he is weighing the picture down because he is a male and is the most dominant. The toys around him are things like guns and balls. This shows the kind of objects young boys should be playing with because of the fact that they show courage and control. In this photograph, TJ's hair isn't combed neatly or parted. This symbolizes that boys are portrayed as messy and would rather be outside getting dirty rather inside brushing their hair. There are two cars in the picture, an SUV and a truck. This shows that boys should be more into big trucks because it shows that they are in control. Boys are always competing on who has the biggest toy. Well, cars are one object boys want to have the biggest and most powerful of. TJ sitting on the pavement rather than the grass symbolizes toughness and roughness. Boys are always skinning their knees but it doesn't really matter to them as long as they are fitting in with all the other boys. Another sign in this photo that shows roughness is having no shoes on. No matter if boys are walking on pavement, gravel, sand, etc. they always claim they don't "need" shoes and that shoes are for "sissies" as TJ would always say to me. All in all, this picture shows the boy culture in childhood and what boys are supposed to do in order to fit in well with their friends. class mates, and society.

This picture is a great portrayal of the male society as a whole, young or old. From the time boys are born, they are really almost conditioned to act in a certain way and carry themselves a certain way, and this picture definitely proves that. The fact that he is playing with a gun is a great symbol of one factor that shapes the way young males act. This shows that from the time they are young, they are being taught to be tough and be able to defend themselves and others around them. Another great symbol in this picture is that fact that you decided to tilt the camera. Since he is on the higher side, it shows that in society he would then be on the more "dominant" side. Typically men have always had more social and economic power than women, and the angle of the camera here reiterates that point. Another interesting point in this picture if his bare feet. This is also showing the male toughness and then not being able to show fear. Even though walking on the pavement may be slightly painful, he sucks it up and keeps playing because that is what men at taught to do whenever they are faced with problems.
