The "Glamorous" Life

From: Mary
This picture represents the constant pressure the media bombards our younger girls with expectation to look “glamorous.” Everyday people are constantly exposed to factors that affect how they act and respond in different situations. They are telling our girls to be able to turns heads at all points of the day. They want you to dress up and glam up your look at whatever costs, because that is what all of the celebrities are doing, which is completely unrealistic. Our children are exposed to this kind of pressure from when they are first born watching Disney movies, to when you are fully grown walking through the mall. This picture represents they type of look women are expected to portray. I have picture of the many popular celebrities from today displayed on the mirror, which symbolizes how you are always bombarded with these glamorous looking people, causing you to want to act exactly like them. I have displayed them in a circle on the mirror. This symbolizes the constant pressure throughout every second of the say. Just as a circle has no end to it, neither does the exposure for everyone to act a certain way. In the center I have a girl looking in the mirror doing her makeup very heavily. This symbolizes how society copies what they see, to blend in and be accepted by everyone. Being able to see both her reflection and her actual self, helps to show that one side of her is simply artificial, essentially covering up her true self in her attempt to blend in. The slight smudge of lipstick on the mirror, represents the frustration and hassle needed to blend in and live up to these standards.

This photo truly represents how young girls think they are supposed to act. The picture portrays the pressure the media puts on girls to look a certain way and that you have to wear makeup and put products in your hair too look pretty. What really stands out in this picture are not just the pictures of the celebrities, but the way they are positioned to symbolize that it is a never ending vicious cycle of girls trying to look like the women on television because they are rich and famous. In reality, these movie stars wouldn’t be them without all the makeup and product in their hair. Another good symbol in this picture is the shirt the girl is wearing. Girls at a young age try to look older, not just by the way they do their hair and makeup, but how they dress. The shirt is “showy” and too big for her. That shows that she will wear anything, big or small, if it is the hot new thing that all celebrities are wearing. For young girls like this too think they have to be someone they are not, just to fit in, is disheartening.

The title of this photo is perfect, because that is exactly how we are expected to be in this society, phony. Women have to wear makeup and spend ridiculous amounts of time making themselves look good just so that they will not be judged.
