Just Like My Mommy

From Nicole
For this assignment I choose to take a picture of my five-year-old sister Aliyah and my mother baking a pound cake. My sister is always trying to mimic what my mother or I are doing, from cooking to putting on makeup. When you ask her what she wants to be when she gets older she always responds with "I want to be just like my mommy." This picture is the perfect example of gender roles at its best. Every little girl wants to learn how to cook and bake goodies. Although through the years the gender spheres have changed it is still known to be a women's job to be in the kitchen. By Aliyah mimicking and learning at a young age how to act and perform tasks in the kitchen she is learning how to become a "real women." In this picture I included all the basic necessities needed to bake the perfect cake including eggs and milk. I made sure to take the picture at an angle that you could clearly see my mother guiding Aliyah in the process of doing everything correctly and safely.

“Just like my mommy”

This photo really demonstrates how society sees women and which roles should be played by women. The little girl in the photo is being taught at a very young that her place is in the kitchen. It is just giving her a look into what she will be expected to do when she gets older, just like she will be trained later to think that she should have motherly tendencies and be able to cook and clean sufficiently. I noticed that this picture employs the separate sphere theory; women are homemakers meant to stay in the kitchen while the men go out and do the real work. This picture shows the gender roles and expectations in today’s society.
