Same Parents, Different Gender Roles

From: Grant
In this picture you see a nine-year-old boy shooting at his younger sister's dolls with a nerf gun. By doing this he is displaying that he obeys the gender scripts of society. According to society, being masculine means being tough. The media often portrays men with guns as being very masculine, which influences the boy in the photo to like toys such as the nerf gun. Traditional gender roles are also seen in the behavior of his sister. By trying to protect her dolls, she is showing nurturing characteristics. Historically, women have been the ones to take care of families. Even as women began to gain the right to be out in the work force, they had jobs such as teachers and nurses, which require nurturing characteristics. At the age of two, this young girl has already learned gender roles that society will continue to push on her for the rest of her life.

This is a great example of younger children accepting their gender scripts. This photograph looks candid, which is absolutely priceless. It’s amusing remembering my older cousin shooting his Nerf guns at my Beanie Babies as I look and connect with this picture. The young man is certainly giving way to his “tough guise” and the young lady is unquestionably being maternal. It’s odd to think back and realize how much you, yourself, were subjected to these scripts and looking now how much children absorb gender roles portrayed from the media and advertisements like a sponge.
