Struggling to Make the Fit

From: Julia
I took this picture to demonstrate "The Two Cultures' of Childhood." As you can see in the picture the girl is stuggling to fit her foot into what could resemble a glass slipper. A glass slipper many girls have seen Cinderella fitting her foot into to win her Prince Charming. This photo suggest that girls who look up to this will go through anything just to win their own Prince Charming.

This photo demonstrates the extreme measures that women will take in order to fit into this mold for beauty. The dramatically small "glass slipper" shows the demand that has been thrust upon women to be smaller and smaller with each passing generation (yet somehow have larger breasts. The symbolism of the glass slipper is one of ambivalent sexism and the old idea of a girl waiting for her prince charming. Girls will go through anything and be anything if that means they win the love and affection of their prince. The fact that the face of the girl is not shown could symbolize the shame some girls feel by not being able to fit this beauty standard. It is quite clear that sometimes the Cinderella story of finding your prince charming is not as easy as the fairy tale version.

This photo shows how much young girls are willing to go through just to look "good". It is obvious that these shoes are too small for her but she still tries to fit into them and wear them, even though it is painful and uncomfortable. This illustrates one of the biggest problems in the United States today. Young girls are expected to always look perfect like the girls they see on TV and in magazines. This "perfect image" is what causes self-esteem problems and eating disorders for young girls. The perfect body image young girls thrive for is completely unrealistic, yet the media tells all young girls that this is what they need to look like to be beautiful, no matter what it takes. But it is just causing more and more problems, because no matter how hard most girls try, this perfect body image is never achieved.
