sleeping beauty‏

from: jamie
society's double standards are hitting this young girl hard. on one side they are saying to keep that inner child and stay young for as long as possible as she cuddles with kitty's and snuggles with stuffed animals. but the other side is saying to grow up and act mature sooner rather than later as she gets her eyebrows waxed, blonde highlights, and body piercings. her closed eyes symbolize the fact that she doesn't realize these changes that are occuring around her. and she is scared to look people in the eye because she knows some of these changes are not ones she truly wants for herself but she does anyways to "fit in" with her friends. she wants to be different, such as having blue sheets instead of "typical" pink for girls. but she doesn't want to be so different as to be an outcast. it's walking a fine line for young girls growing up trying to find their place and be happy at the same time.

I think the choice of imagery for this picture is very powerful. I love how when I first saw the picture I thought she was, in fact, a little girl and not a teenager like the writing implies.
I agree there is a strange standard for women to remain childish as they grow up so they retain this innocence aspect, which reinforces the idea that women need to be taken care of while, at the same time, women should be beautiful, nice to look at because then they’ll get attention and thus, what they want or need (with complete disregard to the fact that women don’t need to manipulate other people to get what they want and that women are not the only people that manipulate!).
I think the girl in the picture is trying to be a grown up but still holding on the innocence of her childhood. It’s hard to fit in and from the picture I think that she’s doing a good job not losing herself on the way.
