Society is a size zero‏

From: Samantha
When I started thinking about this project I knew exactly what I wanted to take a picture of. The way you look these days is such a huge aspect in today’s society. You have to have the right clothes, shoes, hairstyle, makeup and most importantly the perfect figure. The perfect figure is a tall, skinny, muscular look, especially in women. Women are
so judgmental in general and they love to criticize others in order to make themselves feel better. Abs, thin slender arms, toned legs, big boobs, and a nice round butt is what women aim to look like these days. It’s so hard to make yourself look the way you think everyone else looks. That’s why you should just focus on looking the way that makes you feel most comfortable with yourself. You can’t even walk through a department store without seeing a mannequin that isn't almost 6 ft tall and skinny as a rail and that is why I took a picture of this mannequin. You can see by the lack of clothing that even a statue is meant to show women what they are supposed to look like in society. The meaning of this title is supposed to represent the fact that all women look “more” beautiful when they wear a size zero. I disagree with this with my whole heart, I believe that any women has the potential to be beautiful. It’s their confidence however and how they carry themselves that make them the most beautiful person they can be.

Without even reading the passage that goes along with this picture I knew exactly what it was about. Looking at the picture and the mannequin I was thinking that it is how society looks at women. People around us, both men and women, look at females as a sexual object instead of the individual and human being that we are. Even though many people don’t think of it as a negative thing it is and many woman get offended when looked at that way because most women are not. Many people look at magazines, their peers, television, movies, and all other kinds of media to get an idea of what they are supposed to look like to be “normal”. People now and days think that if they don’t look the exact way that media portrays both women and men then they are either invisible, or they are in the so called “background” which I feel that you portrayed in the picture while making the two mannequins bigger and bright, while making the background very small and also making it a darker color compared to the main focus of the picture. Good Job!

I agree completely with your post. The media makes it seem like if you’re not a size zero that you need to lose weight. Personally I have seen girls who were a size one who just looked bad and girls who were size nine who look awesome. Size does not make you beautiful, like you said it’s how you carry yourself. Girl now a days feel that they need to live up to this ridiculous standard because it is all they see. I think this is a very good representation of how we are influenced today. It can be the most subtle things to extreme models. This is a bit more subtle but I definitely see it in the photo. I could tell what it was going to be about but I feel like we brush off the message it gives us, but I feel like it can show how shallow the world is when you’re paying attention.
