Beauty is a Beast

From: Allison
My photo represents the extensive measures women go through to meet society’s definition of beautiful. From a very young age girls are taught that a thin waist, big breasts, and a flawless face are the only way to be seen as beautiful. In my picture this is shown in several different ways. The major focal point in the photograph is a mirror reflection of a scar from a breast implant surgery. This shows the extreme measures women are willing to go through to be seen as sexually attractive, or even to just feel more comfortable in their bodies. A breast augmentation surgery is a very costly and painful procedure, yet it is the most commonly performed plastic surgery. Also shown is a bottle of fat burning pills. This is to represent how society encourages women to use any method, even if it is unhealthy, to become thinner to achieve a more “appealing” figure. The hair products and make up are there to show how women spend so much time and effort into their looks, even hiding their natural features. Overall the picture indicates how time consuming, expensive and painful it can be for a woman to fit into the beauty standards of today’s society. These standards are often subliminally taught at a very young age through movies, TV shows and toys, like Barbie. Young girls grow up surrounded by these images of women who have these unrealistic looks and believe they have to achieve them to fit in.

I agree, this photo provides an artistic approach that projects the truth about girl culture in the world today. Women and girls today undergo dramatic changes to every aspect of themselves in order to be considered attractive to society in order to be accepted. The photo also explains how media creates such powerful influences on young girls. Little girls grow up playing with toys and watching films that project beauty standards of society. Toys like Barbie and the films that include characters such as the Disney princesses, use the tactic of gender socialization to teach girls to be feminine. The “femininity” that is being taught to young girls through the media raises standards for girls so high that it is impossible to achieve and can also be very dangerous. As in this photo, the scar of a breast augmentation illustrates the pressure of society for girls to become sexually appealing or even re-establish their self-esteem to feel comfortable in their own bodies. Society’s pressure on girls creates a treacherous path because the girls begin to act out on being attractive, sexy, and feminine in order to fit into current society’s beauty standards.

Allison,
I agree with you 100%. I like how you put the fat burner supplements and the whitening in your picture. In my opinion many girls feel that instead of going to the gym and getting fit the right way taking supplements is quicker. The supplements are doing more harm to one’s body than it is doing any good. Girls feel that if they have white teeth it makes them look so much better. Everybody wants perfect white teeth but not by bleaching your teeth. I did my photo similar towards yours. Girls feel so much pressure to look the “part” that they are willing to put their body through the extreme.
