He Ain't Me

From: RJ

My photo illustrates the conflict within males trying to fit into society as well as the views society has on being a man. The picture is in black and white to show the outdated opinion of the man's role in life, it also shows that the view by society is black and white so any gray area between the established gender roles are interpreted as purely feminine when males venture out. The subjects face is concealed because men are taught to hide emotions. The mask and knife are symbolic of the mask put on to adopt the "tough guise" and the violence that is perceived by our culture as manly. The lighting covers the subjects dominant side (right handedness) and shines on the mask, knife, and weak side to highlight how society wants men to fit in its mold even if that's not who that man is. The focus is on the mask and not the person because it emphasizes the need for the mask to be present to be noticed.

The sliding-glass door in the back which seems to contradict the contrast of the black and white inside the house where the subject rests is outside the house, outside the box of society. Perhaps the many shades of gray of the real world stand just outside the box and outside the sliding-glass door. However he is looking for freedom in the wrong place much like how men often go out of their way to put women or other men down. Turn around kid you don’t need to wear a mask. We are all part of the world.
