Ew! What's a Barbie???

From: Merrill

In my photo, Ew! What's a Barbie???, a little girl tries to look for toys in the boys section of the store, but her mom takes her to the girls section, and she doesn't seem very satisfied by the options. Her mother buys a Barbie for her and when the little girl gets home she cuts all the hair off in order for her new toy to be more "masculine" and something that she feels more connected to.

In the first two photos, the perspective is from the mother. She is looking down at her daughter and feeling uncomfortable with the fact that her daughter wants to play with the boy's toys. In the third photo the mother took her to the girls section where she thinks her daughter belongs.  In the fifth photo, the two faces looking down on the walls depict her parents looking at her and monitoring what she plays with in order to stay in her biological sex's expected gender stereotype.

In the second to last photo, the daughter has finished "fixing" her doll and is now happy with it because it doesn't look like what a stereotypical girl looks like.

My photo related back to gender socialization because the parents are pushing for their child to play with "typical" girl toys, even though she doesn't want to.
