Athlete v. Model

From Kayla

As little kids we were taught that boys are allowed to play in dirt, play sports and constantly get down and dirty. While girls on the other hand are suppose to always be pretty, make sure you always look nice and neat, don’t play with boy toys and to never act like a “tomboy.” My photo illustrates the conflict between being the perfect female model and being the woman athlete. The fact that half of her face is covered in make-up shows how the normal model now a day looks. Make-up, perfect hair, heels and an outfit that complements the models body type. The other half shows the athlete who clearly just came from practice. The lacrosse stick represents having power and control over what children choose to do with their life. Weather they decided to be the girl that only plays with Barbie dolls and kitchen sets or the girl who goes out for the basketball, lacrosse or even football team. Or the boy who picks playing a instrument over going outside and playing cops and robbers with the neighborhood boys. By having her wear both sides and not taking separate pictures it shows that females are able to juggle both of these roles. Being the “girly girl” but also being able to have some fun by playing a sport that might involve them to get a little dirty and sweaty. According to society and the way children are raised they are expected to follow the gender “norms” and stay within their schemas. By going out of their element and going against the gender norm they risk being made fun of or looked down upon.

Split

The image presented express the intensity of gender roles, specifically for women, and the effort put into merely being presentable. Especially for the public eye. How the woman in the picture is split almost straight down in the middle can be used to describe the situation of the gender. In having to be a stable balance of both feminine and masculine traits to prove a state of control over themself, all while being split about who women should represent themselves to be. To be the individual who strives on self confidence and physical toughness, or the person who stays docile and neat? However, the genders do seem to leak into each other, proving that a combination between multiple genders work best.
The brightly colored sock the model wears on the athlete side in contrast to the black and white outfit can be seen as unconformity with expectations. The soft pose on the formal side shows the softness in strictness. But the stern look on their face is what pulls the image together. It’s almost as if she’s saying to the camera-person that she’s in total control of herself. That she holds the power of her future and destiny and holds no fear. That kind of strength and determination is almost mandatory to survive in modern day society.
Her body language in general shows how well composed she is and understanding of the challenges that life may bring her.The light shines on the entire front of her body. Presenting her as if on display, ready for the public to accept her as she is. The image describes the internal struggle quite accurately while showing how women have to hold themselves in order to thrive. Especially when they need to work twice as hard to maintain that image and balance.

This image represents a lot. Not only does she shows that us women have a girly girl side but, we aren’t afraid to get down and dirty. Acting like a tomboy isn’t a problem to some girls because its easy for those girls who do act like a tomboy to become a girly girl again. I admire the fact that she said “My photo illustrates the conflict between being the perfect female model and being the woman athlete.” By her saying this really made the picture have more meaning. Females always think that they need to be all dolled up 24/7 to look like these models on magazines, billboards, and also on social networks but, really that’s not the case. You don’t have to be in make-up and looking nice and neat in order to fit in today’s society. It’s nothing wrong with getting down and dirty! People may say that only boys get down and dirty and they are wrong! Us women can get down and dirty, play any sport that we may please just like any boy! Guys may look at us different but, in reality we are strong women who can do anything if we put our minds too it!
