PreDance Stress

From Matt

This image shows the emotional toll of Beauty Is a Beast. Women are subjected to impossible beauty standards so they must mask themselves physically and emotionally to “Fit In.” Teenage girls are especially susceptible to societal pressures as they develop into womanhood. Many girls are left to their own devices to figure out how to put on make-up as these two sisters are doing.  These two girls are getting ready for a dance and show just how emotionally taxing it can be. The feeling of insecurity on their faces shows the emotional pain society puts on girls.  The image is black and white to portray a lack of happiness and excitement, emotions that should be prevalent before a dance. The covered window in the background suggests that they don’t want to be seen by a world in which their appearances are lacking.
The girl on the right is struggling to use a brush and lipstick, trying to achieve her perceived ideal of beauty. The girl on the left is measuring her waistline, symbolizing how society cherishes those who are thin. As she cries at the phone in her hand, she is a symbol of vulnerability. Their body language might suggest a lack of confidence. The image is slightly angled up with a main focus on the two girls. Looking up towards the girls shows empowerment. This contradicts their emotions and suggests that as a society, we should empower teenage girls with their beauty and not set unattainable standards.

After reading and analyzing this piece the creative elements used shed light onto a situation that many females participate in themselves, but you never notice it until you’re on the outside looking in. The amount of time we spend trying to look good for people we hardly even know is astonishing. Beauty is beast is a topic that along with the picture sends a message. A message to woman that why put yourself through so much stress to impress? Why put yourself through turmoil trying to become something you’re not? But we all know the answer to this, “because society said so”. Through the media, the books, and the magazines all telling us woman what’s the “look” and because of this two girls are going out of their mind trying to create an image that seems almost impossible. The creative elements first begins with the girl on the left, as she brushes her hair and puts on lip stick this suggesting that there’s a time standard on how long it should take you to look beautiful. Also, if you look closely her eyes and body language give off a sense of hopelessness. Expressing unknowingly the feeling of defeat, as though she will never get the beauty standard right and if so it will take longer than expected and they might arrive late to the dance because of it. While the girl on the right shuts her eyes tightly as if making a wish that she really wants to come true. Lastly, the black and white color scheme brings into account how serious it has become to look so pleasing on a daily basis that it begins to be all a woman ever thinks about. While also suggesting that they’ve been in the bathroom for along time since their color has faded also meaning that their energy has too. Leaving them both surrounded by an invisible darkness of failure. The failure of not achieving society’s high beauty standards especially on a day that called for it most, dance day.
