A picture is worth a thousand words because different people can define and portray it in many different ways. My picture defies the gender norms of being the typical girly girl our culture expects. I am stuck in the middle holding onto my soccer ball to represent I am still holding onto that part of life, but everyone around me is pushing me away from it. As I get older, the sporty side of me is becoming less accepted because I am surrounded by what I really should look like. The beauty standard for our culture is defined by thin, pretty, big breasts, and girly. These girls are typically wearing skimpy clothes, make-up, and won’t have anything to do with a sport unless it is cheerleading. I am wearing dark clothing and I am in the middle of the magazines to show I feel alone and look like an outcast compared to the women who are covered in make-up and barely wearing any clothes. The camera is looking down on me because I am looking up for answers. I look confused because I like who I am, but the pressure around me is telling me to be somebody else.

This picture is an example of what society is teaching young children. Teaching them to grow up to look stunning just like models. The way I see this picture is that the photographer is looking down on you as disappointment. Reason being is you’re dressed as if you’re ready to play soccer, and not dressed up like the women in the magazines. Plus, like you said you’re in the middle of the magazines, and you are portrayed bigger than the magazines. The wooden planks beneath you could stand for the path that you have taken and what you have left behind. The photographer could be society frowning upon you for stepping out of the social norm that everyone is used to. Women shouldn't have to choose whether to stick with the social norm or choose to be different. Society should accept those who choose to differ from the social norms as an important world changing experience.
The photographer is disappointed in the girl because she has not changed for society. Society wants her to be something that shes not. She is more interested in being involved in sports rather then being involved in modeling and makeup which is O.k. She probably feels as if she is not good enough because she bigger then those girls in the magazine and she has her hair pulled back instead of down. I think the difference in people make up the world we live in today. If everyone were the same we would all be confused.
