Society Chooses For Us

From: Taylor
People say pictures mean a thousand words but the truth is pictures mean so much more.  In my photo you will notice the girl in this picture takes up almost all of the space.  The reason for doing so is because at her age, people are starting to zoom in and put their main focus on her, see what she is interested in, and make sure she is starting to follow the women’s roles.  At her age she is too young to have picked out her own wall color so this tells us that the parents chose pink which already starts the process of putting children into a set category.  Just by her room color, this girl is taught that people encourage her to associate herself with the color pink while guys are associated with the color blue.  The lighting in this picture is not meant to be bright, it is meant to be a little darker to symbolize that maybe this is not something this young girl likes to do but rather knows this toy is meant for girls to play with because it is painted in the color pink.  Not only are the toys she is playing with pink but so are the clothes she is wearing.  Look at the mitt this girl chose to wear, notice anything unusual?  Not only does this mitt not fit her suggesting it was not meant for her but it also isn't pink.   Maybe the colors of the mitt are the colors this girl actually likes and is a way of incorporating her true self into toys she does not seem to love playing with.  Not all girls choose the color pink, the color pink chooses the girls.  Also, look at the way her head is placed.  She is looking down at this toy, as a way of showing she is bored, finds this toy to symbolize something she does not want to pursue, maybe she even thinks cooking and taking on traditional roles is something to be ashamed of.  Although this toy is not something she enjoys playing with she does so because of watching her mom cook.  Here she is playing with an easy bake oven, a way to mimic her mother.  She knows cooking is a role women are supposed to take on, along with other household chores.  In our society, there are two categories; a women’s category and a man’s category.  Because the girl in my photo is playing with a toy she is expected to play with, the society looks up at her; pleased by what she is doing.  This is portrayed by the way the camera is looking up to focus on her.  Not only are the girl culture and the boy culture represented by their colors but also by their personalities, their demeanor, the clothes they put on, the shows they watch, the toys they play with, and the roles they start to take on.  No matter what gender a person is, they should be able to choose their own path rather than the society choosing for them.
