The Spotlight on Women

From: Heather
In our society today beauty seems to be everything. Women are critiqued from head to toe by others by looking at their hair, shirt, shoes, pants, jewelry and makeup. Every day there are thousands of women/girls who struggle with their confidence because of the pressure of society. To be a girl you are supposed to have fun, feel confident and feel pretty in your own skin. Nowadays it is very hard to be happy being a girl, why? Today the media has a huge role on the way women “should” look. Women today should not have to worry about what others think about them or choose to buy clothes and makeup just because it is “popular” or because they want to “fit in”.  I chose to take two pictures. The girl on the left is happy. Her smile depicts that she is happy. The way her eyes are looking into the camera shows she is confident in her own skin. The picture is in color which represents joy. Her hair is down and straighten to show how beautiful it is.
The picture on the right is the opposite. The girl on the right is looking into a mirror that has lights around it, which some girls usually use to put on makeup. The mirror and the bring lights symbolizes the media. The light around the mirror is really bright like a spotlight so all of her flaws can be seen. The media (the light) makes the girl feel degrading and depressed. By the look in the girl’s face you can see that she is emotionless and sad. The picture is in black and white to show depression and darkness, with her face being the center of attention. Also, her hair not being shown depicts how her beauty (in the media’s eyes) is gone. Today beauty is not something enjoyable, it is a beast. Knowing that everywhere you go you are being critiqued makes it hard for girls to be their own person. In the light of the media (reading magazines, watching movies and TV shows, viewing social networking sites) girls’ are exposed to what they “think” is the right way to dress or put on makeup. In the world we live in there should be no right or wrong way to dress. Girls and women should be able to dress and look the way that they want to, not for boys and men but for themselves.

I feel the open door in the in-color beautiful picture symbolized the world being open to beautiful women. There are many more opportunities for young, beautiful woman than there are for aging or plain women. In the other photo the darkness symbolizes the opposite, a lack of opportunities. The light in my estimation serves to spotlight the differences. These are the same two women, however their futures are perceived as completely different due entirely to their beauty. We can see in the beautiful picture the two tone hair, thick make-up, jewelry, and cleavage that beauty is her beast. And even in the dark photo the woman is unable to let go off all of her beauty- her earrings are still on.

I feel that the picture on the left symbolizes how she shows herself to society and the mask she puts up for people, the open door shows how much more open society is to her as a "beautiful" women with lots of makeup, showing more skin and her hair done. Whereas the picture on the right she looks sad and more closed off to society, she is sitting in the dark and no longer smiling. This symbolizes the ways that society looks down on women if they do not meet beauty standards, if they are pretty, showing more skin, made up, and faking a smile they are perceived as beautiful and attractive, but when the woman takes off the makeup and stops faking a smile, society shuts her out and leaves her in the dark.
