The Cost of Beauty‏

From: Natalie
The photo I took is a representation of the extremes society has for young women in attaining the “ideal”  image of what beauty is.Almost every female from young to old have products in which they use to enhance or maintain their beauty to a certain liking of  who they’re “inspired” by. Whether it be from a magazine, television,or social media, all of these components from our society influence young women’s judgement and personalized view of what “true beauty’ is. Women will go above and beyond to buy products to try and fit themselves into a previsioned idea of what beauty is in the eyes of our society and the image they portray it to be. Without products like these, most young women feel as though they have no resources or progression toward achieving this epitome of beauty they seek. From a young age women start to purchase various products to maintain their “beauty” and their invisioned standards of how they’re supposed to look in the eyes of other people. In my photo,  I’ve chosen numerous ways to demonstrate societal pressures of beauty on young females. The crowded and almost eye filling of products is to highlight the amounts of all purchases made in an effort to  attain preconcieved thoughts of how  beautiful hair should be. The image focuses and  centralizes on  all the equipment used to for “beautiful” hair. Although  the image’s focal point is primarily on the products, it’s the reflection that gives discomfort. This unclear looking glass is a demonstration of the blurred/blinded damages society can cause to females in the process of keeping up with beauty standards. The mass of space these products hold on the counter exhibit how much  interpretation of beauty consumes most young women and damages their self-esteem from wanting to fit into these molds of societal views and the false idealogy of beauty that is advertised. Overall, this image is an example of how  beauty standards can overpower young women in today’s society.

From the moment I looked at this photo I felt discomfort right away. The extreme clutter reminds me of my own cosmetic mess; this is an image of the daily torture females have to go through. It shows the endless expensive products that women buy to maintain themselves and the disorganization gives the viewer a claustrophobic feeling. Looking at this image and how backwards it was made me feel like I could not breath. There is no space and no opening, representing the constant pressure put on females until they are practically suffocating.

A striking factor to me was the fact that it is unidentifiable to know where this picture is taken. This may symbolize that with all these beauty supplies, its unidentifiable to know ones true self if this amount of products is needed to maintain normality. The cluttered area shows that the standards themselves are a mess and hard to maintain for women.
