Expectations of Women

From: Clare
Within my photo I wanted to capture the essence of Betty Friedan’s novel “The Problem That Has No Name.”  The model in the photo is dressed in a gown to symbolize the idea that women are an object to be enjoyed, but not seen as a human being.  It is close to impossible to cook, clean, and care for the children in a dress; but it was expected that these women could mimic the ”Beverly Clever” persona.  This made some women feel that they could not serve their families in a respectable manner.  In result, women were being prescribed small tranquilizers, hence why the model has a solemn look on her face.  The background of my photo is the most important contribution to the picture in its entirety.  The dilapidated building shows that women were chained to their homes, but without them, they would have nothing to show from themselves.  The chipping paint symbolizes the effects of how women have been stripped of their individual character to stand out in society.  Also, the proportional difference between the model and the rest of the photo is meant to show that women have been seen as miniscule in the social and political platforms.  Social expectations dictated that women were meant to stay at home with the children, and keep their household in order.
