This photo
shows siblings Amari (9), Allyssa (6) and Darian (5) in a bedroom that the
three of them share. When the kids came in from the homework club they got
their snacks and went straight into their room as they normally do. About every
five minutes I went in and took a few pictures, I decided not to stage them
because I wanted to first test whether their habits would match those described
in the text. Although I didn’t give the children any instructions on what to do
there were some aspects of this photo that stood out to me. I chose to take the
photo in the bedroom because of the wall color.
When I asked their mother why she used that particular shade she stated that
she chose it because it was “not too hard and not too soft” so she thought that
all three of them would be okay with it. Additionally, the pink blanket on the
bed to the right and the blue blankets on the beds to the left gave a pretty
good idea that there is a girl’s side and
a boy’s side of the room. In all of the
photos that I took Allyssa stayed on the right side of the room while the boys
stayed on the left side. I chose this photo because it highlights sex
segregation as well as toy and activity preferences among boys and girls. I found
it intriguing that Amari and Darian sat and played with one another for the
entire two hours that I was in their home but I never saw them interact with Allyssa.
Even more interesting was the fact that they all seemed to prefer things this
way.

From Adrienne: This picture is a great way to express sex segregation and toy preference, how the boys look like they’re playing a shooting video game whereas the girl is playing with her doll. I can easily see how your mom picked things to make the room more neutral, from the color of the walls to the plastic drawers. I noticed however, how the girl’s bedsheets are a lighter color which would usually be considered more feminine, and the boys’ sheets are a dark blue, which would probably be considered more masculine. Her back is turned from the TV, showing she really has no interest in the video game, and the same goes for the boys who have their eyes fixed on the TV, not caring what their little sister is doing. The stuffed animal on the bed also expresses her toy preference.
