I’M NOT TOUCHING THAT!

From: Joseph
I took this picture of my granddaughter McKinley while we were fishing outside of the naval academy in Annapolis. As you can see she has just caught a fish and her father is handing it to her so she can take it off the hook. She is dressed in pink with a hello kitty shirt on doing what most would consider a boy or mans activity, which she loves until she catches the fish which is where she instantly goes back to the girly way she was raised where she doesn’t touch the fish dad or grandpa do that for her. She is leaning away from the incoming fish and has pulled her hand away and staring at the fish as if it is an alien or something that is not for a young lady to touch. The look of disgust on her face says it all and puts us back to where we have created this gender gap where young ladies do not touch and clean fish and where that is a mans job. We raise our children with these ideas of this is how a young lady acts and this is how a young man acts and they mirror either the mother or the father for the ways that they act a girl can be outdoorsy but still not want to get dirty while a boy is made fun of if he doesn’t want to rough house and get dirty these gender roles have been passed down and made into such a huge deal that to try and change it would be ludicrous.

This also pertains to the "Glass Slipper Effect" because of McKinley's reaction to looking at the fish as she leans away from the dead fish. Her position resembles the fact that she knows not to handle the fish since that was meant for a young boy or man. She understands the difference between what a man and a woman can and will do as far as activities and jobs. Her Hello Kitty t-shirt shows that she is supposed to love fairytales and act like a girly girl. Even her facial expression strikes a girly girl's reaction to seeing a fish on fishing pole. Since she is with a family member she shows knowledge of the primary goal: family over economic rewards. However, she will end up with certain disadvantages because she does not want to try and pursue a manly activity or job: less power and less ambition. Because she does not want to overstep a few boundaries, she will lack a numerous amount of resources, as well as a sufficient job due to the lack of her ambition. If she does overstep the traditional roles and pursue jobs for economic rewards, then she will most likely end up being in a male-dominated profession, or something similar. She will no longer lack resources and will have power- things that women are not generally "supposed to have" according to traditional roles.

This photo grabbed my attention. This perfectly describes gender stereotypes. The way her hand is closer to her body making it obvious she does not want to touch the fish or be near it. The face she is making is a good way to kind of stand out how girls don’t actually go fishing and how they are not into “man” like activities. She knows that girls should not be fishing.
