I chose to take pictures of costumes at a Halloween store and then chose these three pictures and combined them to show how society chooses to portray the female image. I chose to take pictures at a Halloween store because as I walked around the store looking for a costume for my younger sister I began to realize how most of the costumes for females where very sexual, they showed a lot of skin and where very skimpy and only came in sizes for people who are small in size. On the other hand almost all of the male costumes in the store where of masculine villains, heroes, and fictional characters. Most all of the costumes in the pictures are of female costumes which are to show how females are portrayed to look in the eye of society. The costumes in this picture show different costumes most all of which are female and of which are all women dressed in sexy, skimpy clothing in which they portray some sort of occupation which is stereotyped by society as a male's occupation. An example of this which you can clearly see in the photo is the costume of the referee, which is off to the left side in the center of the photo.

I have to comment on this one only because I struggle with finding even pieces to costumes because they are "one size" or to sexy. I am lucky my daughter wants to be a bloddy football player this year. She did the princess thing when she was little, but i made that. and a cat....its amazing what they have out there even for the little ones. I agree they are bad. if you are anything bigger than a small there are no costumes that are cute. it is even harder to find one that covers up. my concern is as my daughter gets older what she will have to deal with in finding something to dress up in that is appropriate for all places...ie school functions, walking around in 40-50 degree temps at night. she may be 11 but she still trick or treats with her brother. nice picture.
I found this picture extremely profound. I just recently had the same encounter while out searching for a Halloween costume. It really actually made me sick to see that the whole wall of women’s costumes were barely clothes at all. I did not intend to dress as sexy this or that. After finding one that I actually found somewhat decent, it barely fit over my head. I would not qualify myself as over weight but after trying on this costume that is exactly what I felt. This stereotype that women are to be a certain size and dress in sexy costumes is absurd. When did Halloween become a holiday to wear as little as possible? Society has shaped people to believe that is what women should want to wear and what men should find attractive. When I did find costumes that covered more they were called plus size, I couldn’t believe it. The example that really caught my attention was the nun. A nun is a figure that covers almost everything feminine on a women and this is what they wanted "plus size" to wear. As if I were supposed to feel ashamed of being so called plus size. I don't think I would have ever noticed this startling discovery if not for this class. So in turn this picture is a clear representation of society’s stereotypical vision of what is appropriate for women.

I thought that this was such a good picture to take. I was just in the Halloween store the other day looking for a costume and I automatically go over to my section and it is true mostly all of the costumes are "sexy" costumes. They are fun costumes, but if you really think about it not every women can where something skimpy like that. Every model on the front of the costume package is thin, tan, has blonde hair and big boobs so when you see that you think O, I have to make sure the costume looks just like that on me. I am guilty of wearing these costumes but I guess I never really took the time to think that maybe these types of images are giving young girls the wrong idea of how they should dress and behave.
