This is my 14 year old sister, Shannon. At first glance, she doesn't appear to be like the normal young teen. Though this photograph is about a month old, I feel that it showcases that girls can break stereotypical molds and still be feminine and be themselves.
One would usually think that males are the computer geeks. I find that my sister is usually her most happiest while playing on the computer, doing her geeky stuff. You can see beneath the window sill that she has hair products so that she can do her hair and you can see chic lit on the bookshelf behind her. Certain aspects of the feminine culture she still clings to, but she has broken out of her own shell and refuses to give into any conformity of the sort.
Our parents brought us up via gender neutral toys and opening our minds to all gender aspects. Our father is a very computer-oriented person and has supplied us from the very get-go. She is focused solely on her task of surfing on the net. I think that this perspective is important because she allows the observer into her own personal world and she doesn't have to hide anything. She appears calm and collected and very comfortable with herself. This is usually very rare around this age. Seeing that she has just started high school and has come from a private school, this level of maturity in her own personal identity really is astounding.
At the top of the shelf, we see pink and sparkly stuff, and her shirt is purple and blue, but it's baggy, giving off the presence that she is laidback and has not a care in the world besides what's lying right in front of her eyes. Somehow she seems to have escaped the social norm and is on her way to being herself. It's very hard for young girls to be able to breakout and do this. Most sit there and worry about what everyone else is thinking about them and are so materialistic, is makes me want to take a battle ax to their cosmetic bags. If only we could all be like Shannon.

I think that this photo is interesting because its the people that dont conform to society and high school drama that tend to have the best heads on their shoulders. I think high school isnt real life, for some reason, high school has the ability to change everyone. To not be changed by high school surroundings is a true challenge. If someone can make it out and still be themselves at the end of the day, that is impressive. Your sister is brave to break out of her shell, especially in high school. I mean i would never want to repeat high school...haha.
