Halftime Harassment

This event reminds me of the Central Park incident that Sut Jhally talks about in Dreamworlds 3. Thoughts?

I noticed that the newspaper columnist used sex-biased language in reporting that the stadium’s spokesman, not spokesperson, gave a statement.
It is wrong that the stadium officials are not taking a stand against the harassers. They don’t care about the ethical or moral effects of sexual harassment. Their concern is how many fans are in the stands! So they pass the buck to the law enforcement and the stadium authority. Their concern is the fear of economic consequences due to property damage, especially if a riot occurred. They are desensitized about physical harm due to the nature of the sport; again they fear economic loss in possible lawsuits They are following society’s unethical and immoral path of destruction, allowing this harassment to continue-all for economic and social power.
It’s easier to control sexual harassment in the workforce, because you are holding their paycheck. It’s harder to control sexual harassment in an economic establishment, because they hold your paycheck.

I think the stadium authority needs to take more responsibility for this problem. If someone had gotten hurt because of these acts, then, something would have been done. Why does it take going to such extremes to get some one to take some action against the behavior of these men. I think it is ridiculous the way men feel they have to behave just to fit in and be cool with other men. I mean, you don't see or hear about women acting like this. Maybe if someone started taking some action and making some arrests the behavior would tone down a bit. There has to be something people can do to stop this behavior. I mean, when women were fighting for women's rights, the authorities had no problem arresting those women with no just cause. It's just not right! Men need to grow up and act like the adults they are.

You know what's sad? Football games are treated just like woodstock now. You are supposed to gather there with your buddies, have a drink, root for your home team, and enjoy a great American pastime. You wanna see boobs, get a subscription to playboy. I get really irritated when people take advantage of a great thing and ruin it for everyone else. I don't care if your upset with how a game went or how drunk you are. Throwing bottles of beer and hocking spit at women for not exposing themselves isn't harassment, it's assult, Why police don't arrest them all is beyond me. That's what your there for, not to make sure you didn't sneak in candy or sit in the wrong seat. Girls, please. If a guy shouts at you to show the twins that doesn't mean you do it. Football is a spectator sport, but you watch balls insteand of boobies.

Why guys start acting like idiots when they are in a group is beyond me. I'm pretty sure if only one guy was doing that he would be arrested. They would probably think he was way to drunk. I have no idea how this started or why they have let it magnify to this. It does remind me of the Central Park riot. I think when the women comply it tells them to keep doing it. Also, by repeatedly complying its showing women as objects. I completely agree with lisa. Authorities had no problem arresting women even when they didnt have a just cause. Why are they able to hold back on arresting the people acting out here? Just because it's a tradition doesnt mean it's right. i wonder what will happen..

Hocking spit at someone is to insult and disgrace them. It is close to being a hate crime. I'm sure it could be constituted as some sort of crime. Is public humiliation a crime? If not, it should be. The evidence of a DNA sample has already been provided. The security camera's are there for a purpose.

This is actually worse because it apparently goes on every year. If men want to see boobs go to strip bar or go home and turn on the computer. Spitting and throwing things at awomen you don't know for not showing you her boobs is horriable and wrong. Your at a football game watch the game. when you go to say hockey or someother game you don't expect women to be topless or showing their boobs so why there. why hasn't anything been done if this does happen every year. this makes me feel like I couldn't go see a football game and not be harrassed. the action is suppose to be on the field not the stands

Well that is pretty harsh for the men to do that to the women but really, what can you do? They're right, its free speech but there is one thing they could get in trouble for and thats throwing bottles and spitting. If Rivera got spoke to about indecent exposure then the least they could do is yell at the people throwing stuff and causing this whole situation to happen.

I think it's crazy that the stadium people dont take more of a stand againts the "Male" harassers. It is crazy that this can go on in such a public place where tons of people. On the opposite extreme, it shows that this kind of harrsement can happen so openly in public places, what is happening in close doors? It is kinda scary for a woman sake. You would think they would wantt o do more about it so lawsuit arnt filed because now days, lawsuits are filed about anything! Their just worried about money and that should not always be the number one comcers in life. Money dosent make you happy! But nothing will happen until something real bad happens and someone get hurts which is worng. The situation should be avoided all together.

I think this is crazy! What gives men the right that they think they can treat women this way. The stadium need to take action with this kind of thing if they don't they those men will continue thinking that its ok to do this.

I'm actually surprised that the NFL itself has not intervened in some way, especially now that the media has revealed it to the entire world. If NFL Commish Roger Goodell is so intent on "cleaning up the NFL" I'm sure he can find a way to end this. I also surpsied the franchise itself has done little to quell this situation as it reflects very poorly on them. I think that if the fans of the NFL would take a stand agianst these issues they could ensure that the Jets franchise and the NFL face consequences financially which would force them to do something about it. Unfortunately, I don't think this will happen.

It's horrible how men look at women and treat women! I'm personally sick of hearing about all of these cases that are taking place. Although the woman, Denisse Riviera, never should have flashed the men in the first place, how come she had gotten warned about being indecent and the men didn't? Thats definately sexual harrassment, and nobody did anything! Men shouldn't be whistling and chanting at women. What makes it worse is that this behavior was shown in front of children, so what is that telling our next generations? This society is going downhill and something needs to change fast!

As if the inncodent we spoke of in class wasnt bad enough, this was disgusting to read! Being a young woman myself, I know how it feels to be hollared at...in the car, at the beach, in the mall...it never ends. I would never let a man get away with something like that. BOO to the women who gave in...they give us a bad name. I don't think things like this will ever end. Although, my boyfriends college roommates might be hope for good guys out there, they are disgusted by things like- Girls Gone Wild commercials...saying they hope they never have daughters. Why can't all men think this way! What I'd like to know is, why do these men think they can behanve like that? Perhaps if there were stronger women...like I said, I'd never let them get away with that

I think that if people are going to dis respect women like that and put their hands on them, then the cops need to set an example and start arresting people. Sure they wouldnt get everyone obviously, but if enough people were prosecuted, then people would stop. It is a scary day when people cant walk down the street or in this case enjoy a sporting event like everyone else because people are ignorant. I dont know its just a shame that people are allowed to treat women this way and get away with it... cause you know if their mother was with them they wouldnt think to do it.
