I think that it is wonderful how little girls want so much to be as beautiful as their older sister and also act like them, but they should just be themselve. Everyone in the world is beautiful whether it is on the outside or inside. Also little girls should never feel like they have to be like their older sister.

I really like the way this picture shows female socialization. There is an obvious difference between the two sisters. The oldest is clearly trying to fit herself in to the female stereotyped role. The oldest is wearing a shorter dress, she looks like she’s dyed her hair blonde to be “sexier”, and she looks like she goes tanning a lot. The oldest is also standing in a sexy way while putting on her makeup and her pink bra is showing. She really seems to be trying to make a big impression that is aimed at getting guys attention. Her room is pink, which is very “feminine” and her room is a mess, which seems to say that the only think that matters is how she looks. The younger sister is behind her older sister, watching her get ready to go out and looking at a pair of her shoes. She really seems to want to be more like her sister, like she can’t wait till she can dress like her, act like her, and do the things she does. The older sister is making a statement to her younger sister about how a girl should be: perfect, pampered, and eye candy for men.

This photo clearly demonstrates one of the most influential idols of a young girl. Growing up, as we all know, girls are bombarded by media, music videos, and magazines, but nothing could be more influential than a sister of whom you look up to. She acts as the icing on the cake. We know it all, we see it all on tv - short dress, blonde hair, thin and tan, and we all take it all in. It sits inside us. But when a SISTER [keep in mind sisters have extremely idolizing, competitive, attention-stealing, supportive, strong and very complex relationships] struts the 'beauty' around you, it pulls it out from sitting inside of you and makes it a top concern. It creates envy [really maximized by the idolizing, competitive, and attention-stealing characteristics of sisterhood] which not only could result in making the little girl conform, but could result in obsessiveness if the envy is strong enough. Not every girl becomes envious - there are many other emotions that directly come from this situation; But non-the-less, this situation is very influential. I also believe that this scene is very common in households across america. This is a very good picture Melissa!
