Virgin vs. Whore

from: Helen

My picture portrays the classic dichotomy between women's perceived sexual roles. On the left, the woman dressed very "modestly," almost jokingly so in a stereotypical Puritan costume. She also has blue eyes and blond hair, two physical features commonly associated with pureness and goodness. Light is radiating from her to emphasize her perceived purity and holiness. On the right is another woman, wearing more revealing clothes. Her breasts are more visible and her bra is hanging out of her shirt, emphasizing her sexuality. She is also wearing bold patterns, a short skirt, and combat boots which emphasize her independence and assertiveness, both psychologically and sexually. Her stance is also more aggressive to emphasize this. The colors of this woman are also brighter and more colorful to highlight the energy and life radiating from her. Finally, the two women are contrasted by color in very different ways to show that although they are both teenage women, they're perceived to be strikingly different from their dress, from their independence and sexuality. This image ties together how women of all ages are socialized to see women as either "virgins" (passive, pure, non-sexual) or "whores" (independent, assertive, highly sexual.)

Wow what a picture...its bold ans it really shows the opposition of what girls are...it shows that there is no grey area. Its cool that Helen shows us that it not not only clothes that set people apart, but the way they stand, the color of clothes, color of their makeup. It is also no surprise that the girl on the right has darker hair and the girl on the left is more blonde symbolizing purity. It also shows that only blonde's can be pure and virginal.
